It isnt just the motor that i was reffering to, its the whole damn car. Its bmw as a whole. The things i could tell you would make you swear off bmws as a whole. Ive worked at three different brand dealers as a master tech. i also have friends that are techs, some of them master techs, some not. Ive never heard or seen unreliability on the scale that european cars have. its landslide unreliability.
Nowadays its hard to convince any loyal customer of any car brand about reliable issues...For instance, reliability has been an issue with Subaru STis if modded however much you are one of the lucky ones with no issues.

Same will go for another loyal BMW customer that will be hardly convinced that Ford cars are reliable based on the past history of Ford cars...(Found On The Road Dead)

Likewise GM loyal customers will bash how Audis are expensive to maintain and how they keep catching fire. Yet on the other hand, the new ATS turbo 4 bangers are blowing up left and right stock.

We all believe and will all defend the brands we own...it's just the nature of the customers.

But it takes a neutral open mind to look on the bright side and experiment with other car brands.

I would agree about me being a lucky one if i hadn't been a master tech at subaru. I replaced 5spd 10 fold to any ej257 motor up until 2010 when i had quit to go work at bmw. Prior to subaru i was a master tech at ford from 98-04. Im not a fanboy of any brand nor do i pretend any manufacturer isnt without some issues or recalls. But ive found over the years the minority speak the loudest. The ej ring out cry is a mild issue but I cant pretend it hasnt happen to a nice chunk of people. it isnt aa frequent as the net or people would have you believe. With a total of about 550k miles between between my 4 sti id say its more then luck. I had also had 1 ej255 06 wrx but since its not a ej257 i didnt count it. 2 of the 4 of the sti i was the original owners on. I have my brands i preffer but im not about to pretend the brands i purchase from arent without issues. no car company is perfect. But euro cars are absolute trash. I can say without certainty.

Euro cars are the bench mark of other manufactures in terms of performance and luxury...I'm talking about BMW, Porsche & Audi...Even when it comes to the supercars...Ferrari, Lambo...give me one domestic brand that is looked up upon in terms of luxury and performance without mentioning a Euro car for competition purposes

In other words...your statement about Euro cars needs some refinement.

BTW have you raced your STi at the track?...Drag, road course or even autocross?

Bench racing...No bueno.

A stage 2 STi is quicker than a GT in the qtr mile...They usually run 12.5
Fast list says a stock GT will run 12.5 in the quarter also. No bench racing real time slips. Hell my GT ran 12.7 bone stock on a 90 degree day with 300 miles on the odometer. That's a 12.4-12.5 In the fall with good air.

It needs zero refinement. While you have your opinion i have my facts about german cars. You dont even know how cheaply bmws are even put together. Some euro cars have good numbers on tracks. That doesnt make them less unreliable or cheaply made but charge ridiculous premiums. So much luxury with all their (bmw, audi mercedes) fake leather. Ive done all of the following but autocross because it's stupid. Which doesnt matter in the slighest. Ill take Japanese luxury over european ANYDAY. Im not sure why you are arguing with someone in the industry about whats made like crap and what isnt. Its like telling your doctor he doesnt know his field.

Also why you're bringing up super cars is beyond me. Were talking about german european. Not italian.

My 2 BMW's

were always in the shop. My Volvo, Alfa, GTI and Mini were never in the shop. I would not say that Euro cars are worse or better. They just cost a Butt-Ton more to Fix.

The new GT350 can beat cars that cost twice as much on a twisty track. It looks better than German competition. The Hellcat offers 200 mph performance for $60K. The Viper and ZO6 offer supercar performance for 35% of typical supercar cost. They also offer practical operating/maintenance costs (compared to the astronomical costs of parts, service and repairs of exotic cars).

The SRT HC Charger is the fastest sedan on the planet...and costs less than half the price of any euro sedans that offer over 500 HP.

The audi techs have nothing positive to say about the audi's/vw they all share most of the motors anyway, they work on. I can't say anything anything about alfa or Volvo, but we don't have alfa dealers in the US that ive ever seen. I know we used to have some of the older alfa gtv6s. I have zero friends that work at Volvo. I can comment on mini, as my friends that are techs have no positive things to say about their cars either. While you don't feel they are worse, I can assure you they are. They are put together with cheap parts and sold at a premium. Its not opinion, its common knowledge. Im not just saying this stuff to say it because its untrue. I do this for a living. But what do I know:D

I will buy domestic and Japanese cars before I ever buy German cars. Italian cars are clearly out of most peoples reach, including my own. lol I do have a soft spot for vw/audi and Porsche but id never buy one. The ONLY decently reliable Porsche is the 911 turbos, according to our techs. Least problematic. Its nice having a company that owns multiple rights to sell multiple new car manufacturer brands and have most of the techs within a couple garages within a huge parking lot with multiple showrooms. I can go ask any tech questions about their cars. Im at bmw, but we also have, audi, Porsche, Mercedes, sprinter, smart car, jag, rover, lexus, infiniti

GTPP over a 335i.
Its a drivers race IMO - isn't always? It not the Nike's, its the feet...

Yes the F20 335 is soft with light steering, however once you activate Sport mode (engine and chassis) and defeat stability control; it can be a devastatingly fast sedan, even on its measly 225/45 series tires.

Also, LSD (at least the trac-loc on my Mustang EB) is not nearly as forgiving as the disrespected electronic (brake vectored) system on non M BMWs. "Oh it uses the brakes to control the rear, sniff-sniff" Yea, and it works pretty damn well in my experience, off the line, tight autocross situations, and snow!

I disagree with pretty much everything you said. You may be Master tech, I have owned various German, Swedish, Japanese, French, and American cars since 1983. I have also modified, built many engines and complete cars as a hobbyist over the past 28 years.

While Subaru's may be easy to work on (pulling an engine), I would'nt touch them. I know too many people that have popped their turbo engines (split crank case, no thanks). I also owned an Impreza, if you like thin carpeting, frameless doors, sewing machine sounding valve train and a warble exhaust note like it has a plug wire off - fine, whatever turns your crank, just don't tell me German cars are inferior. German cars can be a challenge because they tend to be overbuilt.

I personally believe that BMW's (for example) are worth the premium. Its because they don't use fake leather (they use THICK leather on the sides and back of the seats dude, not sure WTF you are talking about fake?), the quietness, composure, and details like drive-ability (shifting, throttle response, fuel economy), seating position, and long term comfort is what I like and have liked about BMW's for the past 20 years.

I don't think it's a competition stock vs stock. The GT PP will walk all over the 335i on a road course.
