Ecoboost PP. Car is my daily driver. Currently live in Vegas where temps during summer is a constant 100+F. I've been reading alot on this forum. I just need some input on my upgrade path. Car will probably never see track, but I do drive it with spirit, after all its a Mustang! My goal is to help the car "breath" better during summer, while increasing HP and torque. I'm pretty much a newbie when it comes to mods and stuff. My current mods I have in mind are: Catch can, Intercooler, CAI, Tune, and colder spark plugs (in order).

1)Which are the "must have" mods for the Ecoboost?
2)Which mods will help extend the life of my car? I intent to own it for a long time.
3)Any special maintenance owning a Ecoboost engine? (off topic)

Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If keeping a long time just add a catch can to that list

This maybe a dumb question. But does ford provide a service that cleans inside the engine. I don't have a catch can installed, at the moment...

Has it been verified that the ecoboost is even going to have to have this cleaning? And if it does who is to say it doesn't need to happen until 100k miles?

That is called a carbon cleaning and most likely you would benefit (not 100% need one) by 35-40,000 miles. Carbon is a issue with many turbo FI cars and the cleaning will get rid of that. All depends on driving habits, gas etc. something a lot of guys would do is called an Italian Tune Up to help with carbon...I do this also. Drive on highway for 20min at 3500-4k RPM once per week or every other week if you don't drive much. This will help get rid of carbon and it works pretty well.

I don't know what Ford charges but I know when I had my GTI it was anywhere from $600-$800 for carbon cleaning if that was the only work they were doing. I luckily had my intake manifold replaced under warranty and while they were doing that they cleaned it for $250

According to my mechanic's research, the ecoboost is direct injected, meaning fuel is introduced directly into the combustion chamber and does not pass by the intake valve. It's supposedly the lack of this 'fuel washing' of the intake valve that causes the carbon buildup, or at least exacerbates it. Pretty much every new car sold today is direct injected, with the notable exception of the V8 Coyote (and possibly the V6) (again, according to my mechanic). Direct injection is the result of governmental demands for higher mpg, and like other stimuli or mandates (like ethanol :frusty:) the consumer gets the shaft with very little benefit. Unless, of course, said consumer is a corn farmer receiving subsidies. So yes, it is very likely that an ecoboost engine will need this cleaning. Just my .02

I'd do this order
1) Tune from a good tuner, OTS tunes are weak. Read up on AP3, it offers stuff the others don't
1) Intercooler
2) Spark plugs
3) CAI
4) catch can. (I still do not have one)

I know I listed Tune and Intercooler as 1, so take your choice.
I can tell you we are seeing EBM here with charge temps of 175+ at the end of the 1/4 mile. I'd prob. do the intercooler first and tune next.

I live in Phoenix, it was 108 yesterday, so I feel your pain. I did catch can and intercooler first, then oil cooler right after. I'd say that's about it! I just ordered colder plugs too.

Thanks for the info! I will have to try the Italian tune up once in awhile.

I say we just sticky this post so ppl stop creating this thread
This is why some people are afraid to ask question sometimes. Does it bother you that much that someone has the same thread as others? If it does, don't read it. I'm at pretty sure the others who answered don't mind. It fun talking about cars. Ease up
