I have been wanting to put one in also in my car. I will be keeping an eye for experiences, I can say the cars tune will have to be modified for the lower temped thermostat.

A lower thermostat rating does nothing on these cars

computer controls the fan. so a tune can change that to match the new tstat. tstat by itself is not gonna give u more HP, but will make the car take longer to get up to temp, and it will run cooler on the highway. wont change in city or stop and go (fans controlled by computer right).

cooler engine has benefits, less heat soak, better resistance to spark nock. but emissions and computer control over FA, spark and everything is really intense, and really dependent on temp. not like the old days where the 5 min tuneup give u more HP.

the programming in the puter is so new with this model, im betting only a few tuners "think" they know what the drivers going to be with a cooler tstat.

on the flip side stock i think is 177, so the 170 doesn't sound like its going to hurt, nor have i seen anyone say it hurt.

i think ill do it, but when i have it apart for other mods..

I wouldnt mess with it without specific tuning for it. But even then I personally wouldn't do it as the motor is more efficient running at stock temp than lower. Youll have better fuel aromatization which will give a more complete burn. This is why a lower tstat can result in carbon deposits and worse gas mileage.

The main myth is that a lower tstat will keep the air charge going into the motor cooler, and maybe that might be true at idle and part throttle but at wot the air is getting sucked in so fast that its really not heated up much before it enters the cylinder so in reality the air entering the cylinder at wot isnt not much higher than the IAT and not anywhere close to the cylinder head temp. A lower stat might make the air not heat up as much when the motor is drawing less air such as idle and part throttle (because air isnt flowing through as fast and has more time to absorb heat from the motor before going into cylinder) but thats not really a good thing. Denser air at idle and low throttle means youll be injecting more fuel to compensate and therefore poorer gas mileage when cruising and idling. More fuel being burnt at idle means more carbon deposits

Instead of a tstat, focus on ways to reduce the IAT or upgrade the cooling system to a larger radiator (if you dont have performance pack radiator). I drilled out my grille holes where the intake is to lower IAT

You can dramatically reduce the operating temperatures in your performance engine. This will allow for the engine to naturally make more power power, ensure consistent performance, and increase coolant flow to help extend engine component longevity. Ford does all of their power testing at ~140° coolant temp so we are getting you as close to that number as we can while still providing amenities like heat. This is from livernois pertaining to their 160 t stat

My tuner said dont even worry about it,plus when it gets cold out and it gets real cold where im at,their are other problems that can occur.Ford new what they were doing when they did heat testing, and im sure they took into account these cars would be tuned.

My temps can use all the help it can get, I live in south Texas, doesn't really get cold here except for a few days. Noticed my head temps to get passed 205 anymore. Opposed to 215-225 from before

Yes I changed mine as it was recommended by Lund and some other top tuners. My head temps dropped about 10-15 degrees and are no higher than 195 during the summer months here in Maryland (high 80s low-mid 90s)

We always install the Reische Performance T-stats in our project cars. It's actually one of the first mods we do.

Cooler operating temps are always beneficial. The only reason the cars come from the factory with a higher temp stat is for fuel economy.

Regarding tuning- You'll want your fan speed settings to be adjusted after installing a lower temp T-stat. If you don't you're not going to see the full benefits of installing the cooler temp T-stat.

Let us know if you have any other questions.

Thanks, Jared

That is a significant temperature improvement!

Same here. That is nice running at 195. WOW.

I thought people were making more power on dynos once the temps got up above 200*?

I saw a 10 degree drop in cylinder head temperature after installing the 170 thermostat. Doubt it makes any difference in my setup but I didn't like seeing 205 cylinder head temperature. The stock thermostat had 180 written on it so 10 degree drop make perfect sense.

You sure about that? Mine lowered my head temps by about 25 degrees with the proper tune.
I got the same one the OP posted about from Lethal Performance.
