Also, it should be noted that some states do not allow enforcement of the tint laws for out of state travelers. (Ironically, TN no longer allows this despite my earlier story about a previous experience there.)
Are you saying that in these states (like TN, for example), they can't enforce their tint laws for out of state cars? So, if an out of state car had a lower level tint than what is legal in their states, they can't cite the driver?

Hi guys,

I am thinking of getting my side windows and rear windows tinted. My car is registered in Illinois, but I drive to Nebraska a lot (so, I drive through Iowa as well). I sometimes take road trips to other states.

I believe 35 percent is the lowest you can have in Illinois, and I don't intend to go lower than that. I believe 35 percent will be legal in Nebraska and Iowa. My question is, if I were drive through other states where the legal tint level is higher (states like MN or OH, for example), would I be breaking the law? If I get pulled over, can I get cited for the tint?

Thanks in advance.
@markology you might want to double check your laws. I believe the max allowed in Iowa is 70% for the side windows. That would be the sum of the factory tinted glass plus whatever tint you put on.

Most every new car today comes with tinted glass even on the sides. It is usually just very very light tint. Does anyone know the rating on the factory glass in the 2015's? I don't have a meter to test it.

Thank you for that. I thought I was reading Iowa wrong. So, if I got 35%, I would be in violate of Iowa? Is that how we read this? 35% means only 35% of sunlight or UV gets in, right?

UPDATE: I just called Iowa Department of ... and they said yes, I will be in violation at 35%. This just sucks! Maybe if I drive within speed limit and don't do anything stupid, they won't pull me over.

Yep, 35% isn't going to be legal. I usually put on 50% and I haven't had a problem. It is light enough that even the hard ass cops don't really care. Not nearly as dark as I'd like but it is more important that I don't get pulled over.

I was shocked how dark the 35% hybrid tint is.

great point

Then if you live in a state that only requires one licence plate you can't drive in a state that requires two.
Great point. I am from MD but lived in Philly. I remember once I was pulled over for no front tag in Philadelphia. When the officer realized that I had out of state plates he let me go and reminded me that in PA you have to have two tags...the irony is you have to have 2 in MD, too... I just didn't feel like installing my front plate!

so I guess discretion is key

Do you have pics of your car with this tint?

Thanks.

I just picked up my car on Wednesday so I haven't gotten it tinted yet. Sorry.
