Tazdevil there is a little more reasoning to why people go for 19 compared to the 20" everyone will have a different reason and is a debate that will go on for pages after pages. 19" will definitely be a weight saving and is more sought after for guys wanting a Motorsports look or motorsport track function, infact you even have guys like HRE who is always a reputable brand pushing on 18", this allows for performance tires that will grip on the track ( money here is usually not a factor) unfortunately you wont find many or any slicks or track performance tires in a 20" but plenty in smaller sizes. we at MRR Wheels are about to release such wheels in flow forge construction which will allow for 18" 19" performance sizes. thats also the reason the top Mustang GT350 and GT350R are set with 19" wheels although they can fit 20" they did 19" with a nasty performance tire ready to melt the asphalt.
thats my two cents plus more.
Thanks for all of the comments. Not sure if I will lower. If I do it will be awhile. I am not racing or "tracking" the car so weight and grip (other than having good all around tires) is not a major factor. I will wait until I need to replace tires before I change out rims, if I do at all. I guess I am looking for the best setup in regards to looks and simple economics in regards to price (both wheels an tires). I am going for the subdued look and would like matte rims, either black or a charcoal/grey. A square configuration leads to money saving with the ability to rotate. A staggered setup is more muscle car and bad ass. I have used discount tire exclusively for the last 15 years as they have saved me tons of $ with the replacement certificates and would prefer that the tires are available through them. Even if I don't get them from them initially I will go there and buy a certificate for the tires. I need to check with them and see if they will do any tire or just the ones in their normal inventory. I presently drive 40 miles just to see them.
Wheel width, hmmm, nothing smaller that what comes with the PP but would like to push them out so they are more flush. If that means bigger rubber or spacers I don't know. I have heard bad thing about spacers. I have been a truck guy up to this point and am used to having sidewalls so the lo-pro thing is new to me and would like to have some sidewall for the comfort aspect but this is not the number one concern. It is my DD but my bad ass DD.

Thoughts......thanks

I can get you set up with Paul at Need 4 Speed on a 19" set. this way you keep your factory tires and put away your factory wheels so when is time for the stang to re sell you have perfect factory wheels saved up or a quick craigslist sale ( lol) either way if you take a staggered set of VP5 youll save plenty of money in regards to tires. Im sure Paul can send you a quote with a great deal.

Yeah, me three

Methinks the 20s look sooo cool but you might want to look a little deeper into the cost of kool for the super stance 20s.

Here are a few you might want to look over before pulling that trigger:

Talks about increase in wheel diameter tested results

Some meta filter information

Here is another

And another

I did this for me (again) as well as you and I've checked this question before and will stay with the 19s my car will come with. Later my aftermarkets will be 19s too.

Few with 20s will probably tell you the 19s have an advantage is my guess. The 20s and dropped with HP springs is the hottest stance around.

One 20s owner told me he figured out that because more 20s with low profile tires break and need replacing wheel makers make more money, which makes since.

Yes, they look better, meaner, say I go fast (sorry for the lame) but they might even be a hit with women for looks, they are just not for me.

good luck and enjoy the ride

Thoughts . . . tires with profiles under 50 on cars are not intended to have sidewalls that are bellied out like 60 series and taller on trucks. A little bit past the wheel is OK, but a heavily rounded sidewall shape way out past the wheel is not.

This is at least implied by the guidelines for determining what the "measuring width" wheel for any given tire size should be. IIRC, it's something like 70% of the tire's section width for 55 profile and taller but 80% - 85% for tires shorter than 50 profile.

Choosing tires with taller profiles and mounting tires on wheels of slightly narrower width than "measuring width" usually improves ride comfort. But your first line of defense here should be the specific tires themselves - some tires ride more smoothly, others more harshly, and it's a tire construction thing that you can't see. Among max performance tires, Michelin's Pilot Super Sports ride quite well, Bridgestone's RE050 line maybe not so well.

FWIW, a "square" setup generally understeers a little less (most noticeable when you're driving pretty hard), but if the wheel widths are not too narrow the car will respond more responsively to your steering (making the car "drive" like it's a little smaller than its size and weight otherwise suggests).

The looks folks like 20's.
The performance folks like 19's (or even 18's).

Interesting that the 19" tires tend to be more expensive than 20", that's a bit unusual. But the more expensive wheels will wipe out that advanatge for the initial purchase.

true or you can do what Merv did today.

We installed the 19x9.5 ET 30 GF9 wheels on his GT PP cost less then 1500 used factory tires weights in the mid 20s and concave as hell plus custom offset and pcd means the flushest fit possible.

The MRR VP5 will work on the GT PP as well in 19" just a heads up for everyone.
