This question may have come up before in the Forum, but I thought I'd "cut to the chase" and just ask it again if it had.

This article claims the top speed of the GT is 164 mph "governor limited."

http://blog.caranddriver.com/perfor...mustang-gt-versus-2015-ford-mustang-ecoboost/

Does anyone know what the top speed of an off-the-showroom-floor GT would be if it wasn't "governor limited?" I'm just curious.

Thanks.

In theory, an automatic GT with 3.15 rear end and 27" tall tires would top out at 258.7 mph @ 7,000 rpm. In practice, I suspect that air would prevent that from happening.

A manual with 3.31 could hit 260.94, again at 7,000 rpm on 27" tires.

Those are calculated numbers, and don't account for the fact that your tires aren't actually 27" in diameter when the car is sitting on them, and doesn't consider wind resistance or the fact that you don't make peak power at redline.

Other numbers - all at 7k rpm and 27" tires:

V6 or Eco Manual w/3.15: 253.55 mph
V6 or Eco Manual w/3.55: 224.98 mph

GT Manual w/3.31: 260.94 mph
GT Manual w/3.55: 243.30 mph
GT Manual w/3.73: 231.56 mph

GT, Eco, V6 Auto w/3.15: 258.70 mph
GT, Eco, V6 Auto w/3.15: 246.19 mph
GT, Eco, V6 Auto w/3.15: 229.55 mph

Just remember that the realities of Kinetic energy require that it takes something like 4 times the power to go twice as fast, and that doesn't address wind resistance either....

Air resistance increases with the square of speed.

I'm sure that any current Mustang, with governors removed, would be stopped by drag well before 180 mph. I mean, look at all the changes that Ford made to the Shelby GT500 to get it to a 200 mph top speed... and people were still topping out around 191 or 192 in it.

Couple magazine tests got pretty close to 200. Still makes it the fastest mustang ever made.

By far the biggest challenge in getting to top speed is finding a length of asphalt long enough to safely get to the top end and back down again. At stock HP you're probably going to be stopped around 170 max, maybe less.

Just look at the Hennessey video of 0 to 150, once it hit 140 (and sixth gear) it was a dog, it would take you the width of a state to reach 170 let alone the >200MPH that it could "theoretically" hit.

They shifted way too early to the sixth gear in that video! The 3.73 geared car with henessey 700+ package topped out at 195 at the limiter on sixth gear!

However seeing how the car was still pulling after 190 mph, if they change the end gear then you will see 200 mph+ for sure!

Its a real dog in 6th. I made it to 141 in 5th, probably somewhere a little under a mile, and put it into 6th; only made it to 146 in the next mile. All uphill a bit, though.

Given a long and flat enough straight, getting to 170 probably would still be difficult.
