1st Oil Change Mileage

Well, I'm new to Ford and the idea of a syn blend in a modern performance car (my rides for the past 40+ yrs have been BMW's). The coyote v8 being a naturally aspirated port injected motor is going to be easier on the oil so I guess it could run ok on a syn blend for 10k miles, maybe. But I have to say, I guess my GT Premium is not so premium after all. I'm disappointed. Up 'til now I've been impressed with the technology and engineering in the Mustang GT.

The direct injection turbo of the Ecoboost is good to go for 10k drain intervals on a syn blend according to Ford? That's hard to swallow.

While on the subject of base stocks, is the Amsoil 5w20 spec'd for the Mustang GT still a Grp IV PAO base stock? This amsoil tech article says so, but its three years old - http://www.upmpg.com/tech_articles/motoroil_viscosity/index.html

I'm still a bit of a skeptic. Part of it is I have no idea what a syn blend is, but I'm sure Ford has done a lot of testing with this blend. Uoa's will tell the tale if anybody on this forum actually runs the syn blend to Ford's recommended drain interval . . . which is . . .what? 5k or 10k and how does the olm tell the difference?

Do you think the 5w20 syn blend is ok for e85? Most people seem to run full syn...RP or Amsoil.

no idea. i ran rotella t6 5w40 on my subaru with e85.

Thanks for the links. Very interesting discussion, and by the way Asharus, I like your oci strategy.

I'm not worried at all. I was a bit sarcastic in my previous post. I'm not a fan of dumping perfectly good and serviceable oil. I believe in the oem's maintenance schedules, and the development and testing they do to establish the formulations of their oils and their drain intervals, though I'll admit I sometimes deviate from them (with uoa's done more out of curiosity than any real concerns).

Modularv8's post was very helpful, too, tho most of the links no longer work. I think Ford is ahead of the curve in their use of thin oils like 5w20. From what I've read they are the wave of the future. Technology doesn't stand still and that certainly holds true I think with the chemistry of automotive lubricants. Stuff that was unthinkable 5 or 10 years ago now is SOP. It's a fascinating subject. I read that Shell is coming out with a 0w16 oil. The sky is falling!

I have read all the posts here and I am wondering why people are changing oil before the car tells them to. From everything I have read Ford does this for a reason and the days of having "break in oil" are long in the past. The manual would tell you to let it ride until the computer tells you to change it (guessing around 5,000 miles).

My thought is to change it at 3,000 miles unless the computer would tell me to do it sooner. What does everyone think? Any value in changing at 1,000 miles and, if so, what is it?

Yep, had mine done at 3500 after 6 months and a track day, had them put the factory fill in, not full synth.

Just check it, if it's on the stick you are good.

If not buy the factory oil and top it off. Mine used about a qt but I have my own way of breaking things in...

That's my plan ... probably change it around 2500 ~ 3000 miles and use the Motorcraft FL500S filter and 5W-20 synthetic blend. Run that oil change out to 5,000 miles (or OLM), then change to a full synthetic which will be at around 8,000 miles on the car.

I had the first oil change at 7500 miles. I got a sample of the oil analyzed. Take a look here if you want to see the results.

And yes, while this is a topic that elicits strong opinions and generates many discussions, it's been my experience over multiple Mustangs from the last 2 generations of V8 engines (the original 302, 2-valve/3-valve/4-valve 4.6L) that following the maintenance schedule is sufficient for normal street driving.
