What are the differences between just turning traction control off and advance trac? When would I want advance trac off or for what application?

Only in the rain when I would leave it on

Unless you're a pro driving on an actual track, I would leave advance trac on. The roads are too unpredictable to have such a valuable aide disabled.

The only times you should shut off stability control are when you're actually racing, or when you need to get unstuck from mud or snow.

I just wish the instrument panel/cluster would show some sort of icon when the Advancetrac is turned off, as it does when the traction control is turned off.
Maybe I'm spoiled, but my BMW did show an icon when all the nannies were disabled.

Or when you want to do donuts and power slides in the snow in the Fall to get ready for Winter driving.

When you spin the tires in a power slide, does the advance trac cut power? I thought traction control off would prevent cutting of power when spinning the wheels.

When spinning the wheels in a straight line, having the traction control off allows wheel spin. Stability control will step in on a power slide because its entire raison d'etre is to prevent increasing yaw moment. More by application of brakes to individual wheels than by cutting throttle, though.

You can check out the Wikipedia article on yaw in road vehicles for more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yaw_(rotation)#Road_vehicles

The group I run with actually have us keep it in Sport mode. Prevents lots of very expensive cars from being totaled. You have to overdrive the car to get it out of shape so it's like it's not even there...and walls hurt.

I've told plenty of my students, until they accure enough time, to leave all the nannies on, and slowly tick off the boxes as they get more comfortable. Usually the first question most guys ask is "Traction control (generic) off or on?" And my reply usually involves asking if they are willing to total their new car over possible loss of control that is out of their hands. Coolant down on track, random loss of grip from any number of circumstances, or even getting into situations they arent familiar with.

That being said, I've always been all off, unless in some serious rain.

In my 2011 I would turn off the nannies every time I got in the car (in summer), because they were too strict and it was annoying. The 2015 is a lot better and more subtle, so I usually just leave it on. You could try driving both ways for a while and see what you like better.

Advance Track still interferes in a straight line. Try a burnout at a track and rpms will drop after a couple seconds in Track mode unless Advance is turned off as well.
