I've cut open my fair share of oil filters. I'm not sure about "to-date", but at least what I cut open in the past and have also seen other post about, many of the Purolator and Motorcraft oil filters look damn near identical.

I try to stick to the Motorcraft, Purolator PUREone and WIX oil filters. Mobil 1 is nice, but the price is more than the preceding I mentioned and doesn't seem any better. I'd like to try the Purolator synthetic, but there isn't a version yet for the Mustang.

The consensus on the Ford forums is that Purolator make the Motorcraft oil filters. I've found it very hard to discover the specific numbers on the MC filters. I think most all the higher end filters (e.g. Purolator, Fram, Bosch, Wix, etc.) are rated around 94-98% efficiency at 20 microns (the smallest particle the filter will catch). And all these filters use synthetic filter media (e.g. "micro glass") rather than the less efficient cellulose. The Ford racing filter is rated 98% efficient at 25 microns (according to American Muscle - Ford Racing Tech Line didn't have a clue). I think it has slightly greater porosity to flow more oil (maybe a thicker oil, too), keep the oil pressure up and lots of oil pumping through the oil cooler. The slightly larger particle it will let through (25 microns) is almost irrelevant for all practical purposes. 5 microns is the size of a white blood cell. Anything smaller than 40 microns is invisible to the naked eye. So we're talking about how many angels can dance on the head of a pin when you compare the efficiency of many of these filters. If you don't track your Mustang regularly, or if you haven't significantly modded the motor, the stock MC should be more than adequate (that is also the opinion of American Muscle).

PS: The ISO test procedure to rate oil filters includes a test to determine how much stuff the filter will catch before it starts to clog up. This rating is expressed in milligrams I think. It would be a good metric to know in comparing filters but I've never seen it revealed anywhere. The total size of the media or the number of pleats may have something to do with that, but i'm just guessing.

I believe Ford has done its homework and the MC filters will work just fine at the specified drain intervals.

What is the specified Motorcraft filter for the 5.0L Coyote? Is it the FL820S or the FL500S ... or can either one work?

I had a Wix filter fail once. The crimp that holds the can to the base plate wasn't done properly and oil came pissing out as soon as I started the engine.

The FL820S has a metric thread and the FL910S has an English thread so they can not interchange. The FL500S has a lower bypass pressure than the FL820S.

I have a lot of Chrysler products over the past 35 years that called for the FL910S spec filter, I always used the FL400S spec filter which is longer and when there was lots of room I would use the FL1 spec filter. These all have the same 3/4-16 thread, gasket diameter and bypass pressure.

With the first oil change on my Ecoboost on went a FL400S filter. The design of the filter adapter on the block won't allow a larger diameter filter. This filter allows a full 6 qts of oil instead of 5.7.

Motorcraft is the aftermarket business unit of Ford. They make their own deals with suppliers meaning what they sell is not necessarily the same as what is used at the factory.
