The dick move was not paying attention to your surroundings. You hit his car. Should have left a note to apologize.

Excuse me but that is not a dick move, in the least. I tow a jet ski every weekend in the summer and leave the hitch on every day, everywhere...for this reason. That means its not being used 80% of the time. I'd love to see a car get my hitch through their radiator, totaling their car out when they rear end me and I won't have a scratch.

Hope your car is fine...but if I came out to slashed tires, smashed windshield, any damage or some stupid note you can bet your ass my hitch would do a lot more damage before I left. If someone ever blames my PARKED, EMPTY truck for their incompetence, so help me...
It is. It's obviously hard to see and in that parking environment every inch counts. Taking it off takes 15 seconds and there is nothing incompetent in failing to notice it when it's dark outside.

solution is don't live in nyc or own a car lol... considering how expensive it is there not sure how or why people do want to live in it... i'm far away from a city boy so i'll never get it nor would I have a car I would have to park like that and risk it getting beat to hell.

I'm from Chicago and you gotta look out for stuff like trailer hitches before you park, but it's common courtesy to take them off. Every inch really does count. It's annoying to be parking at night with snow mounds and ice all around with a 10 inch extension off the car in front of you. Only ran into this problem once.

Exactly, I think jimmy is getting at the unspoken rule that city folk go by.

A trailer hitch that extends beyond a reasonable length should have a reflector and/or the owner should take off the car when not in use.

...my .02 cents

Jimmy, you got your car in that spot!?!? That's impressive! I can parallel park, but I'm not sure I could've gotten in there without hitting both cars! There may be city courtesy of removing trailer hitches, but I put this one you, the trailer hitch didn't hit you. Glad to hear the damage is minor.

I posted three pictures, one from across the street of the car parked in the spot, one of the space between me and the Pathfinder behind me, and one of the space between me and the Pilot in front of me (with the trailer hitch sticking off the back of it).

what the heck only one pic is showing up for me, and even the one that was quoted only showed one pic

edit: opened in IE and now i see the 2 red Xs where the pics should be.

edit2: showed up on my phone.

Wow jimmy that's a tight spot, LOL!

i cant tell from the angle, but i think you might be ok if that hitch is at the same level as your license plate. it probably took most of the damage

I parallel park in spots like that every day, so I have a lot of practice at it.

It's not a huge deal -- like I said, dings and dents and scratches and scrapes are just a natural side effect of parking in a city. But it's a widely regarded common courtesy that you take off your trailer hitch if you're street parking. I think I've seen maybe two cars, total, with trailer hitches in the last four or five years street-parked. It was just hard to see in this instance in the dark on ice.

It's sort of the city equivalent of somebody taking up two spots in a parking lot. It doesn't make you a bad human being, but it's discourteous to others who have to park there.

So, let me get this straight. You're mad at a guy, that left a trailer hitch in his vehicle, that you hit, while parking? Best of my knowledge, there isn't a law about leaving your trailer hitch in your vehicle. Maybe the guy tows a trailer a lot, who knows. Either way it's your fault for hitting it. As a matter of fact, If I remember correctly, on another post when another forum member got the rear bumper of his Mustang scuffed in a parking lot you said: "If you drive a car in public, dents, dings & scratches will happen. They're not a big deal." It's just the way of things...right?
It is the way of things, and it's truly not a big that I got a small dent in the front bumper from it. Those are gonna happen, repeatedly, over the life of the car.

It's just a matter of courtesy. It's one of those unwritten rules of parking in a city that probably wouldn't have bothered me if the guy had out-of-state plates instead of New York plates, because then at least I could say he might not have known better.

ill have to agree with you. it's a dick move, but if it was me i probably wouldnt take it off either.

i usually dont park on the street or parallel park, but i do look out for hitches when I do, especially if its an SUV, there's always a chance that there's a hitch on it.

and no i would have never attempted to get into that spot, LOL. i feel for you jimmy. i'd prob lease a prius if i was in your situation.
