We got a nasty storm this morning with baseball sized hail at my house. Need a new roof and siding on the house. Wife's car is more than likely totaled.

Oh man that totally sucks. I hope insurance covers it.

Really nasty storms, usually with tornados, have been getting more common around here... just had one a few days ago. Lots of hail, downed trees and flooded basements. We have been lucky so far, but I'm thinking of having a generator installed.

I'm on the NW side of Springfield off of Chestnut and West Bypass. My wife works at the old airport and happened to go home 20 minutes before it hit to meet an air-conditioning tech. Her car is still more than likely totaled, but her team at work all of their cars are destroyed. Like windows, headlights and taillights busted! I was at work on the East side of town and we got pea sized hail for a minute. No damage to the mustang.

Damn. We had that kind of hail in our area a couple weeks ago (western burbs of Chicago). Dodged severe weather yesterday but central and southern IL got pummeled twice. It’s been a bad spring so far, one of the worst I can remember. The below was as of last Monday 4/20/2026. Wild…

I was working on a contract in central Illinois a number of years ago and it was too far to commute, so I rented a motel room during the week and went home on the weekends. I saw ads for mobile home rentals that were a lot cheaper than a motel and asked a co-worker why? He asked if I'd like to be in a mobile home in a tornado! That's why they are so cheap. Tornados in those wide open Illinois plains were pretty common. I guess it has gotten worse.

The terrain in SE Wisconsin is rather hilly and much severe weather goes south around Lake Michigan. But, it's definitely getting worse.

Progressive has been an absolute nightmare to deal with and the kick in the balls just keep coming from them! I HIGHLY recommend anyone who has them to go over your(mostly home owner's) policy in detail!!!

Today being Mother's Day, is about the time I start planting my tomatoes. But, not this year. Weather has been to erratic and extreme. I have to put it off for another week or two and hope things stabilize.

To be fair, I doubt that a motel would fare much better if it were hit directly by a tornado. I mean, sure, the tornado may not lift it off the ground, like it might do with a mobile home, but it would still turn it and its occupants into a pile of rubble and minced meat, wouldn't it? 🤔

Mobile homes are one of the worst and most dangerous things to be in with a tornado. A motel would fare MUCH better, but could be leveled with a direct hit.

No doubt. That's a given. What I'm not sure, though, is if you'd really be better off in a motel. Sure, the motel itself might fare much better, in that people would at least be able to tell where the motel used to be, going by the pile of rubble and the one or two walls that might be still standing. But would that make any difference to you if you were inside, I wonder? Or would you be minced meat anyway?

I mean, if the motel looks like this:

As someone else who lives in tornado country (IL leads the US in confirmed tornadoes this year), yes a motel is 100% better than a mobile home. It’s anchored to a concrete foundation of some kind and is a much sturdier structure than a mobile home. The damage may be the same, but there’s at least interior rooms/areas away from outside walls in a motel. And possibly a basement/below grade area. Look at the interior closet/room in your posted picture. It’s still there, so you at least have a chance of survival.
