Has anyone here done a factory water to oil cooler delete? It looks like that’s going to be, yet, another challenge that I’m facing with my turbo install. BL Fabrications instructions calls for deleting the factory cooler, but they don’t mention adding another cooler in its place.

I’ve done some research and have since purchased an air to oil cooler, which separates the two fluids from one another, in the event of a failure, so that the coolant doesn’t mix with oil. See videos in the link below.

While I look forward to the completion of the turbo project, I’d be lying if I said it’s been easy, as a good portion of the install has been extremely aggravating. Just when I think I’m finally crawling out of the weeds, I find that there is another challenge to overcome.

I’m looking for mounting ideas for mounting cooler, so if anyone has any ideas or photos that they can share, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Here is a pic of the front of the car for reference, which will have a 6” thick intercooler on the front.

RHD vehicle so it is different positioning but i ran an oil cooler delete cause our version had a small habit of mixing the oil / coolant together. You 100percent need to run an oil cooler for an FI application. Can you not use the MACH 1 / GT350 setup?

I’ll have to look into the M1/GT350 cooler. I am becoming more and more limited on space to mount things. I’m planning to mount a Davies Craig EWP 150 on the driver’s side, so that area may already be spoken for.

You can try searching on TMO to see if the guys over there have some info for relocation since their sole use is tracking their cars.

If you’re referring to mounting the oil filter block, you would want to mount it so there is no chance of debris hitting it and so it is at least somewhat easy to access too. Some folks mount these on the frame rail (if there is room).

If you’re referring to where to mount the actual oil cooler core, take a look at the Harrop setup - that seems to work for many modified S550’s.

There was this thread but it’s not clear if the OP totally bypassed the factory cooler, but he gives some images to how his kit is mounted:

Also for anyone else looking to do such an upgrade and getting rid of the factory oil cooler setup:
There is the Mishimoto oil cooler kit which does bypass the factory setup and comes with all of the parts to do it:

There is the Harrop oil cooler kit too:

This is great info! Thanks for posting this.

I think Harrop mounting location would probably be best in my application with all that’s going on at the front end of my car.

Yea I was looking at the images you had posted of your front with bumper cover off and thought the Harrop positioning of the oil cooler core would work best (in your situation). With the location of the intercooler you have, there isn’t much room to do a forward facing oil cooler core. You don’t want to block the intercooler and you also don’t want to impede airflow to the oil cooler core either.

The Harrop setup is ideal and even though it looks like it would not benefit from a direct “forward” airflow mount (like your intercooler or say radiator), it does get cooled because of the airflow and forces happening under the nose of the car at speed where air is forced up and into the rad/engine bay cavities.

Keep your build pics coming along once you get the cooler mounted it will definitely benefit/help others in the future looking to do the same.

Good luck with the build too, looks great!

I deleted mine and used the double Venturi tee to cool my turbos with. Never reinstalled anything else. I don’t do any long road track events. Oil isn’t getting super hot 1/4 mile at a time. I’ll watch it when I do roll racing etc, but I don’t anticipate it getting outside of what 5w-50 likes.

What’s the double Venturi tee look like on your car?

It’s the thing you unhooked these 2 from on your car. Should’ve been part of your lower radiator hose.

I gotcha. I thought you may have been running an aftermarket one. I had been looking at some aluminum versions of them online. I actually very carefully cut mine out of the factory radiator hose using a Dremel, thinking I could still use it, but the factory oil cooler hoses were molded in such a way that new hoses would have been required.
