Local dealer has 10 quarts of synthetic blend and filter for $179.

Glad I have the ability to do it myself for 1/3rd the price and 20 minutes of my time.

I recently had the oil changed in the wife's new Escape at the dealer since they gave me a freebie when I bought it. I was looking over the invoice to see what it would have cost, and was amazed that it was only $67 and change. The most amazing was that the Motorcraft oil, obviously bulk, was only like $1.99/quart (holds six). I'd have at least $40 in the materials, plus my time and disposal.

I usually like to do my own changes, but if that's all a change costs for that rig they can do it. I'll happily sit on my ass in their cushy lounge and read.

It only takes you 20 min?

Hell, it takes me 20 min just to lift the front of the car and remove the under belly plastic cover. haha

Ramps are 10x quicker than jack and stands, takes 30 seconds to get up on them.

And I don't need to undo anything, or at least not on my car. There's a panel under the oil filter that's 1 bolt and that's it. I can have both oil draining in less than 5 minutes after getting it up, then it's just a matter of waiting.

Ok so sometimes it takes 30 minutes if I have to go back inside the house to grab a beer.

I actually enjoy changing my own oil on everything I own. That way I know it's done right and it's another opportunity to get under the car to check for anything out of the ordinary. I get a sense of satisfaction taking care of my equipment, and from these prices y'all are posting, I am clearly saving a ton of money.

Heard that. My dad is a bit older but same deal where he takes his vehicles somewhere for service now. Although he did just recently change the serpentine belt on his truck rather than pay someone. Admittedly, I'm not quite as limber as I was 15 years ago either, haha. Usually gotta pre-game with some ibuprofen before I get at it nowadays.

I would have to go under and clean up their mess and check everything so I just do it myself, 60+ years old, LOL. Done it forever.

Same with me, I have always done my own wrenching. Now I’m 70 yo, and I have totally lost the desire to do any under car work, I passed my classic cars on to younger family members and limit my automotive activities to detailing and light mechanical/electrical work. I am happy to pay a shop to do oil changes since there is not much to be saved doing it myself. Today I had to drop $4K at the shop to fix a bunch of engine and power steering leaks on my Silverado. I know I could have done the work, but spending hours to days under the truck dropping the transmission and oil pan to replace all the block seals made no sense to me. Better to pay the mechanic.

It was hard d for me to let go , luckily a friend owns a shop and he does quality work . But we moved 5 years ago to the Desert and have the Dealerships service our vehicles . One of my fellow Mustang club members friends owns a couple shops and I'm going to a CnC Saturday he is sponsering , and will talk to him about servicing the Mach .

I was just quoted $230.00 for an oil change by a local speed shop. They are doing a few suspension mods for me anyway so I’m going to have them do the oil change also. Plus like some I’m up there in age so I don’t care to crawl underneath cars anymore.

The speed shop likes using 5w-50 and my car is N/A so I might ask them to use 5w-30 instead.
