Sticky rears for 19x8.5 wheels

Hello folks, newbie here to Ford Mustangs but not to fast cars (Buick GNs) and motorcycles. Here’s my dilemma. I have a 2022 Mustang GT premium package but it has the 19 x 8 1/2“ wheels. I recently installed a Roush stage two and I find myself needing some really sticky rear tires. I want something that will fit these wheels correctly. I have searched around but choices seem very limited. I really like these 5 Y spoke wheels, easy to clean look good on this car IMO. Not looking for a major change or investment, just a great time slip! Would like to drive to and from track and cruises. Any recommendations? Thanks!

for sticky summer tires, Imm not sure whats in your size. Sounds like you need a drag radial or a tire like the Yokohama A052, but not sure what fits your 245/255 size. If you find yourself wanting to go wider than about 255, start considering a budget for wider wheels.

Note: Tire compound matters a lot more than a few mm of width. Also going much wider than the standard for a wheel is dininishing returns. Tires need proper support to get the capability out of them.

OEM tire 255/40 which is where I want to be. The Nitto 555 R2 is a 275 and they recommend a 10" wheel........I want to avoid tire bulge related downsides.

Staying with the OE size I think the best you can do is a summer tire. I run the Nitto NT555 G2 albeit in a larger size and have been happy with them (street only). I have also seen people on here like the Firestone Firehawk Indy 500. Both are available in 255/40R19.

Thanks for pointing me to all the great tire threads! I have some reading to do. Doubt I can check all the boxes but maybe get close. Probably dreaming for a 1.6 short time!!

BTW, car is a 10 spd auto w/3.15 gear.

It'll fit. Not much in 255/40 that's as sticky.

Staying with the OE size I think the best you can do is a summer tire. I run the Nitto NT555 G2 albeit in a larger size and have been happy with them (street only). I have also seen people on here like the Firestone Firehawk Indy 500. Both are available in 255/40R19.

that G2 is a terrible tire for grip. The ONLY thing good about it is the price. Its an ice skate when driven hard. Yes its that bad.

Indy 500 is only marginally better. I like it better for a cheaper tire but for a blower, NOPE.

Yokohama A052or a drag radial, maybe RE71RS, CRS, or a few others. Some of that depends on the weather you like to drive in.

In that size the F1 Supercar 3 isnt bad.

its not quite to my standards for the linear grip you want, but may be your best option in that size.

The Nitto G2 sucks in dry weather too as an FYI.

Your best bet is going to a bigger wheel so you can get a better tire. Lots of Black Friday sales right now so you can get a good deal on wheels. SVE (LMR) and Apex Wheels have good sales right now. Can get lighter wheels in a better size to suit your needs

Sooo this is one of those very rare situations, where I'd actually run a tire that is too wide for the wheel just for grip. because I know the tire well and its a huge step up from the other options. I'd run the Yoke A052 in 265/40R19 (versus the very short 255/35R19).

A052 is worth some tradeoffs. Its going to feel pretty squirmy in corners because its soft in general, and because its pinched on an 8.5, but its going to stick, the linear grip from it is pretty insane.

because its not a standard fit and the tire is too wide (by the chart) for the wheel, you'll need to find a smaller shop which isn't run by lawyers and computers to mount it for you. Its not THAT insane, I ran 285s on 9" fronts, but they just don't make the perfect tire in that size.
