I bought some gt350 take off sort cup 2’s from a member a while back. I’ve had them in my garage for like 4yrs I’d say. Can’t believe this is that state of this tire. Crack runs about half way around. Inside is unblemished both that’s a LONG crack. Any thoughts? I know the answer but it hurts so bad.

Age is definitely a contributor to tire life. I'm guessing if you compare a new tire of a certain model with a 5YO identical one, you'll find the older tire has developed a harder durometer rating. I experienced a blowout on a tire that had low miles and when I investigated, it showed the same cracking you see. Rubber not only hardens but shrinks, and thus the cracks.

Those are no good. Take them to your local tire shop for recycling

That sucks. Yes that tire and those with it are not usable.

IMO not a good idea to purchase tires unless they will be used immediately. Sometimes deals pop up but if they age out on you that deal turns into a loss.

Yeah I know. Thought I’d make it to the track and never did. Life got in the way of course. I think I only learn from the most expensive lessons haha!

Hello; It depends on how you look at things. There is a common notion a tire goes bad after a few years. To a degree this is correct. Tires do crack on the outside and the compound does get harder.
Back in the 1970's I became first a shadetree mechanic doing side jobs. Had a dentist friend with a 911 Porsche and some other old cars such as a 1952 MGTD. We bartered work for a few decades. He had so many old cars that he cut corners on things like tires. Kept running them after they got cracked and old. The tires held up. No problems with them blowing out. Some wound up with 15 or more years on them.
I retired in 2004 and bought a pickup. Drove less and less. Often not 3000 miles in a year. The spare was on the same steel wheel as the road tires so I painted it the same color, argent silver, and rotated it with the other tires. Replaced all five at around 65,000 miles. Had close to 15 years on them. Hauled a few heavy loads at the ten year plus time. The tires did crack and did get harder. Would spin some at pull out in the rain but not a lot more than the new tires I replaced them with.
I put a lot more miles on my small car but they lasted six or more years before wearing down.

So it boils down to what you are comfortable with. Also, the intended use of the tires. For high speed runs on a road course track you will likely not get the traction of a newer tire. Might not pass inspection. But to run them on the road could work. At least such is my experience.

Guess it will depend on how tight money is for you. Watch the episodes of ROADWORTHY RESCUES. Often the guy has to replace badly damaged tires but at times he runs the really old tires on the road for a time if they hold air.

Nope, would not even run them on the road. Look at the crack running down the tread. That’s asking for trouble. Might he get lucky and not have something happen? Yes there’s always that chance. Taking a big risk of that tire failing and damaging the car, getting in an accident, etc. Just replace them.

This one has aged and dried out. Tires are self lubricating but they need to be used for that to happen. Check out the RV industry and the one of the biggest problems from lack of use.

He’ll put them on some old rims throw them on the car spin around and around until it goes pop probably only get the two rounds but it’ll be fun for a minute .! If they are as good as Michelin says then you shouldn’t have to worry about it doing any damage to the car itself just the rim you have it on ..

The way they are cracking now he'll be lucky if they dont crack and split even more while being mounted.

And even then, not a good idea I think.
