Based on what I have read on numerous forum's by the owner's and tuners with regard to how much the CAI picks up vs the tune; obviously you need a tune if you increase the MAF housing size but when people were putting on CAI's with the same as stock MAF size housing they were not picking up much power over the stock airbox which indicates the tune/93 octane/timing is where the majority of the power came from.

I know the 2015's do not use a MAF, I referenced MAF's in my comment to address the CAI's being worth much without a tune.

Take a look at the dyno from your tests at DTP and the the one at Rev Auto; the Rev Auto gains were more realistic IMO of what one could expect to gain with just a CAI vice what you guys showed....not trying to start a pissing contest or fight with you or anyone at JLT, just reading and commenting.

Rev Autos test was awesome, we support it and back it all day.
It's all about testing that's why we sent out like 10 kits This week to shops and tunes who needed them. We want results.

15-20 from nothing but an intake and a 3rd party test? I'll take it any day.

I will be at the track on Sunday. I will directly compare the JLT to the Airaid I currently have on the car.

Real results, from the track.

Mike
No offense but that's going to be near impossible to do. I doubt you would see any difference at all or too much of a difference just because the conditions of the car would have to be identical down to the cylinder head temps and even cat protection numbers.

This.

You wont be able to accurately attribute any differences to the intakes vs normal variation from a host of other variables

I can tell you from being on the dyno and the street that the stock air box is very restrictive on the EB cars. From what I have personally seen on the dyno and this is using Ford's stock tubing and adding a short tube and filter which replaces the stock air box, I have seen 20 hp on my dyno on a stock EB mustang. So I can belive JLT is picking up nice gains.

Also because there is no exhaust on the drivers side of the car your intake temps do not spike as much as everyone believes. I am seeing 2 degrees over ambient with a open filter, no box. I have been driving mine this way since late Oct. testing several variables on intakes for the EB tempatures have been from 70s to teens during this testing (hey its Oklahoma).

Please remember this isn't a 5.0 and the variables are different due to the motor configuration.

Hey everyone,

We have our 2015 Ecoboost kits ready to go.

The car was an automatic, this was only swapping to our intake, no tuning. We will have a tune package available for the vehicle in the future.

We made a couple baseline pulls on the stock air box to get a solid number to compare against.

We then swapped our intake right on the dyno, and made more pulls.

A tune is not required with our intake! However tuning will greatly benefit Ecoboost owners.

On the CJ Poiny Parts Video it does state that a tune IS required. So that is inaccurate?

The 5.0 intake requires a tune because of the bigger MAF housing, but the Ecoboost doesn't use a MAF sensor so no need for a tune.

So am I understanding correct, the air box is an open design that "seals" tomthe underside of the hood?

We will see. Either way, me making a full pass at the track with each CAI is going to provide better data as to how they perform than a dyno pull ever can. The cylinder head temps in my passes are always about identical. I am not concerned about that. I don't hot lap the car, I let it cool a minimum of an hour, hood open, between passes. By the time you get up there, do a burnout and stage...the cylinder head temp is fully warmed. I have looked at my logs and it is always between 185-190 on the pass. My car has a tune, so I don't know how much cat protection fuel dump it is seeing on a pass. I am going to provide the best possible environment I can for the test. I have a PP auto car and it is cool down here. The only real heat soak issues I see are with the POS intercooler. I am going to bring my sprayer and get the intercooler cooled before the pass with ice water.

Mike
You seem to have a good grasp on what is normal for your car. Look forward to your times and findings:thumbsup:

Can you data-log with your tuner? That would give you "real numbers" to show.

(Just a suggestion)

Thanks for doing a comparison.

I can't disagree that some cars respond better to mods then others. That's true for every car, some cars at $2000 set of headers only produces 1-2's.

While you do bring up some valid points, do you have any data on the Ecoboost intake system to provide backup to your claims?

Car manufacturers are fighting multiple things to get a car on the road these days, anything from EPA standards, to MPG standards to noise regulations. So you don't know exactly where the restrictions lye in any particular model.

I have a lot of experience in the turbo 4 cylinder world from a previous work place that specialized in Subaru's, Evo's, speed3s etc. I will tell you every one of those car's responded differently to Intake, downpipe, intercooler, and other bolt on's differently.
.
yep,

and the fact that there is not maf sensor make the intake less an issue, are you saying that there is a restriction in the intake? as the orifice of your intake is stuck inside the stock one?

had a speed3 own a tsi2.0. and an rx8..

people that are in this forum really dont no much about turbo cars..

well i am going to try to help as every tuner/sales person gets a free ride here..

how it works with a turbo 4 cyl.. header, doent have one, turbo doent have a replacement yet.. downpipe.. starting to become available..

intercooler most important..

but really the power comes with a downpipe and a tune..

if you have a stable intercooler...

intake it can make pretty sounds. and if you get to the point of a upgraded turbo. you might have to tune for it.. (not jtl specific)

let me know where i have gone wrong here..

hope this helps the people that are learning.

beers

I don't think you really know as much as you think you do, because every application is different.

The limit we're bypassing here is not the throttle body opening, it is not the intake manifold, etc... it's the intake alone, which is why that's what they're selling.

Here's what you need to realize (from my first response above) -- every application is different, which has been posted. You say you come from a 2.0tsi (I'm assuming VW/Audi) -- if so, then you realize that the intake is a huge restriction, even on the stock turbo. People have regularly seen 10-15whp gains from just doing an intake on a tuned car, even at stage1/2 power levels. k04? nobody will use the stock intake.

Intercooler, yes, it's important. On these cars however, we are seeing gains from ALL of the bolt on's -- intake, downpipe, catback, intercooler/charge pipes...

I don't think we can ignore these, as I'm pretty sure this engine was neutered pretty badly from the factory. I'm curious what kind of power a FBO Ecoboost puts down (IC, Turboback, intake, charge pipes, tune)

I guess what I'm getting at is what are you basing your knowledge from on this platform? You stated in the previous post that the intake system isn't a restriction on this car.....How do you know that?

How do you know the downpipe on all turbo 4 cylinders is the biggest restriction? Subaru's yes. Evo X's no, speed3s(intercooler is a failure)...no.

Using very general statements attempting to educate other people is doing nothing but spreading general misconceptions across all platforms.

Will a downpipe with tuning pickup more power then an intake? Yes. Are we claiming anything differently? No.

Have you seen an Ecoboost intake tube? It's huge in length, the turbo is on the opposite side of the car of where the air filter ends up. You think theres no room for improvement?

Anyway we'll have more third party testing here shortly to "educate" us all.

@swoope Ive owned a 2010 Mustang GT a 13 FRS a 14 Camaro a 14 Focus ST and a 15 Ecoboost Mustang. By your logic of ownership equaling experience I am pretty damn close to most of the shops here. However, no I dont know everything that the guys building products do.nwhat I do know is that each application responds to different mods. My Camaro would pick up a good 20 HP with the right intake. The FRS would be lucky to get 3 HP. It depends on so many factors that its extremely hard to speculate by comparing it to gains from older platforms. I trust the guys at JLT because they consistently put out quality products and invite and encourage third party testing.
