Back in the 60s into the early 70s gators were hunted to near extinction since there were no regulations on their hunting so they were put on the endangered species list. They rebounded with far greater numbers than expected in a short time frame and I believe are still considered endangered. Florida used to and may still have controlled hunting by permit only especially in south Florida everglades area to help keep the numbers in check but that does not nearly control their numbers.
Gators have dens burrowed in the banks of their homes where they live and give birth as well as store their food supply. They do not eat their large fresh kill immediately but rather twist and turn to drown it and then take it to their dens to store so it ripens and becomes tastier to them. Small kills that they can swallow whole they do eat on the spot.
In the 30+ years I lived in Brevard County Florida and fished and boated in many fresh and brackish water of the state I have encountered gators from as small as a foot long to ones over 16 feet long and as long as you respect them and their territory, they will respect you but get to close and they do get aggressive.
