2020 GT PP2 - High Flow Cats on a stock car?

Hey guys,

So my 2020 PP2 smells like rotten eggs when I get on it. So my assumption is that the cats are going (or are gone?). I only have 15,000km on the car, I'm the original owner. The car has a Steeda H pipe installed.

I took the car to the dealer today and explained the smell, the H pipe, etc. They're unsure if Ford will warranty the cats, as my Ford account has an "FP" tag associated with it, This is due to the fact that I had bought a Ford Performance Power kit level 2 (throttle body, intake, tune). I ran that for a year, but it's been back to stock for a few years now. But it seems when you register the power kit with FP they log your VIN with Ford. Great. Because of that, Ford has red flagged the car and wants the dealer to call before any warranty work is done. The guys at the dealership have been great, they're going to see what they can do.

Long story short, if the worst case senerio comes to light and Ford tells me they won't warranty the cats, I'm going to need to replace them on my own. They gave me a rough estimate of $1500 CAD each ($3000) for OEM cats. Not installed. If I'm at that point, does it not make sense to just order high flow cats? Or another type of aftermarket cat? Again, the car is fully stock other than the Steeda H pipe.

Sulphur smell isn't necessarily indicative of bad cats. If it were mine, I'd log the front and rear O2 signals during a cat test and determine for myself if they're bad. If you don't have that equipment or ability, then scan for codes and see if the car thinks there's a problem. The OBD is pretty good about diagnosing bad cats and will tell you if there's a problem, but it does take some drive cycles to complete the diagnostics.

No, the factory PCM logic performs a cat test periodically and typically at least once every time you drive it. Usually within a couple miles of cold start, once it reaches certain temp, rpm, load, etc thresholds it will run a test. You can watch bank1 and 2 lambda and you'll see them start to cycle opposite of each other. At this time, watch rear O2 mv and they should stay fairly constant, or switch high vs low once or twice per side. If the rear O2 mv cycle high-low-high at the same frequency as the fronts/lambda, then the cat is toast.

Some types of fuel can cause the smell, try a different supplier and a higher octane. If my wife uses the local supermarket for fuel her car smells sometimes but if she uses BP it is fine.

Some types of fuel can cause the smell, try a different supplier and a higher octane. If my wife uses the local supermarket for fuel her car smells sometimes but if she uses BP it is fine.
I use various fuels (all the highest octane) but from different stations and companies all the time

The factory Powertrain warranty isn’t replaced by the Ford Performance Warranty. The FP warranty runs concurrently with the Ford Factory Powertrain. This means that if the FP kit was installed on a year old car that has already logged 10k miles on it, the kit and FP (3/36) warranty now only has 2/26k left on it and Powertrain has 4/50k left.

The Ford Warranty starts the day the vehicle was invoiced (sold) by the Dealership.

It’s all outlined within the FP warranty doc.

The only reason the car would be “flagged” by VIN for the FP install is to let the Dealership Service Center or Tech know that the vehicle’s PCM may have altered parameters OR there is non-As Built hardware on the vehicle and IF there is a requirement to reflash due to XYZ work, they would have to flash back the proper FP tune to the vehicle. It is also there too in the event there is a major warranty claim where additional diagnosis is needed to determine failure and coverage.

The Factory Emissions Warranty is 8yrs/80k miles whichever comes first. Exhaust and all associated emissions components are NOT part of the factory Powertrain 5/60 (or an FP 3/36).

My car has a weird smell ( sulphur?) when I get on it and always has. Reading here that seems to be pretty normal for these cars.

Is it possible to get an emissions test done on your car ? This will tell you if the cats need replacing. If they pass the test it means they are just contaminated and its your call if you want to replace them to get rid of the smell.
