My warranty finally ran out last week while my car was in the shop getting the intake manifold replaced which was the last major part of my old engine in the car. Since I bought the car at 1,800 miles it's had an engine replaced, 3 a/c compressors, and exhaust manifold, and numerous other small things I can't recall right now repaired in the 6 years and 37,000 miles of ownership.
My conundrum; I can get a 6 year 40,000 mile Ford used premium care warranty for $5,480 (I live in California so I can't use Ziegler or Granger or even Ford) and that is the best quote I've received from a dealer so far. I know this a stupid question to ask considering all the work I've had done on the car so far but I have to for my own peace of mind, is it worth it?

Sounds like you've had more than your fair share of problems with your Mustang. That makes me (and probably others) kinda cringe and cross our fingers, hoping that this isn't the norm! So I'm wondering what the options are that you're considering. Are you looking to trade yours in for a 40,000 mile Mustang used plus $5,480? Can you provide more details?

I can understand why you're considering cutting you losses with your current car.

It would depend on how much expense you're willing to spring for from here on out, assuming you keep the car.

It's comparing apples to oranges, but I'm in the same boat with my '19 F150. Latest problem is a leaky rear pinion seal which reared its head right as the truck neared 30K miles (total bullshit, I might add). One of a string of issues, and it's now out of warranty. Luckily this time it's something easily fixed, but an extended warranty is back in mind.

Just be glad you don't have the current 6.2 chevy. 10's of thousands of trucks waiting to detonate because GM switched a parts supplier, and those parts are failing consistently.

Ooof…well I was going to tell you to forget it and drive it. My warranty ran out 3 years ago and I’m about to click 70k miles. But you have had a bit of a run with yours so I wouldn’t blame ya for keeping her warrantied 😬👍🏼

I’m not an advocate to buy new cars. But, if my car has had that many issues and everything is operating correctly. Then I would definitely get rid of it. If that’s not an option I’d bank the $5,480 (if that’s the cost of an extended warranty) in an high yield savings account and use it for future repairs.

Sorry misspelling that's been corrected. I was considering buying another warranty for $5,840 that would cover me for an additional 6 years. I've thought about getting something else but I can't find a suitable replacement that I like nearly as much.

Ok. That makes more sense. Seems like a pretty strong price for an extended warranty to me, but the way that prices have been exploding, it may be reasonable. Insurance is kinda like gambling against yourself. If Murphys law applies, if you buy the warranty, the car will run perfectly from then on.

Seriously, if you can afford the warranty, but not a major repair, it might be worth the peace of mind. If you can forseeably afford a major repair, then it may be better to put the cash away and hope for the best. I'd personally save for a rainy day and drive the car gently.

Good luck with your decision!

You said you can’t get a warranty from Ford but you got a quote from a dealer?

I think if it was me I would sell what you have and put the warranty money towards another Mustang with less miles on it. Sometimes cars will just keep going wrong and no amount of time and cash will ever see them right.

I also hope it's not the norm... I'm at 23,000 miles and haven't had any of the problems he listed,
and I don't want to start now!

Then again, I just have a GT. These kinds of stories seem to be more common with the GT350.
I'm going to tell myself I dodged a bullet by not being able to afford one! 😅
