New Shelby American GT350

Shelby American just unveiled the S650 GT350 at Barrett Jackson. 810 horsepower. They will also make 36 GT350R’s.

Haven’t seen what motor they’re using but assuming it’s a Whipple 5.0. Shelby American car, so I’m assuming they’re starting with a GT and modifying it? They didn’t say much as far as details, live unveiling was only a couple minutes

Just watched it, very exciting. However, I might be a bit ignorant here, this doesn’t seem to be a heavy RDT&E effort like the 16-20 GT350, guessing because Ford may not be involved?

That’s my assumption. If I had to guess it’s like the Super Snake, it’s modified a Mustang GT. Much like the originals in a way, they’ve probably ordered a bunch of GT’s from Ford and will modify them. Especially with the S650 being locked down, they probably are using a Whipple and they already have the access for the Super Snake.

Not likely a somewhat bespoke car like the S550 GT350’s are, but I guess we’ll know more when SA releases more info

I guess the licensing agreement between Shelby American and Ford is done for now. Quite possibly final confirmation that next specialty Mustangs from Ford will use the Boss and Cobra names.

really amazing how far Shelby has fallen from their original pedigree. Original GT350 was a racing inspired road car that could also be raced in grass roots. Now they're up-badging and adding FI and selling for 2x the cost.

To think this is the same company that created the GT350, Daytona and made the GT40 so great

Some interesting commentary already. In my opinion, makes the Dark Horse nameplate more historical looking into the future (homologated versions with the purpose built Dark Horse R and Dark Horse S factory race cars) versus the GT350/GT350R unfortunately.

Maybe we will see a ford performance engineered S650 street legal Mustang in the future

Shelby American has always taken Ford products and done modifications to them. The usual process is that a customer buys a Ford Mustang from a Ford dealer and has Ford deliver it to Shelby. Shelby modifies the customer car based on the customer's order with them.

Ford produced Shelby's are developed outside of the regular Ford engineering group by Ford Performance, a completely separate engineering team responsible for the Ford GT's, the Shelby's and the Ford factory race cars.

Think of it this way: FP starts with a body in white and designs the parts needed to make it into a sports car. Shelby American starts with a street Mustang and adds a bunch of special parts to it.
