I used my old tried and true for my wash this weekend. Haven't used Carpro perl in probably a year or more. Diluted 1:1. I forgot how runny it is at that dilution. But that's the look I aim for. Shame it doesn't last more than a few days :(

What have you found to be most durable long lasting tyre dressing?

PERL performs credibly timewise in more than a few online vids.
I guess you’re going to add in tyre preparation and pre cleaning is paramount.

Ok, go easy on me here, the following is my first attempts at capturing in car video.

Saying goodby to a car is never easy, I mean we would keep them all if space and funds permitted. However, the Mustang is going to be especially hard to let go of, even though it will be replaced by another one. No car has got under my skin like this one, it changed my life and became a beacon of happiness and exuberance.

So, as time with my S550 Mustang comes to an end, there are a few things that I want to do before it leaves. One of those will be to give it a final polish, another will be to author an "exit interview". I also want to capture some videos that I can look back on in the future. Apart from a couple of static sound clips, I have never done this before.

With a Cannon G7X MK III, a Rode external microphone and a window suction mount ready to go, I just needed to find some time and get on with it. The plan was to film some in car videos on a nice, quiet country road. The result was two 3 - 4-minute clips that sadly don't meet my standards. One of them I edited to salvage something from my efforts, but the image quality is not great.........................



Image quality aside, the video does show why I love this engine so much. For context, this car has a Borla Touring Cat-back exhaust with the Borla central resonator rather than a H-pipe. This means that in sedate driving, the engine and exhaust produce a subtle deep note, but open the throttle and it produces the sort of noise that gives me a smile from ear to ear. Every Single Time! Yes, the exhaust is loud, but not so loud that it overpowers the induction note. And it's that deeep bark when getting back on the gas after a gear change that makes me weak at the knees. Oh, and that zingy top-end.

I intend to persevere, hoping to improve the image quality, in particular image stabilization.

From my experience, tire dressing longevity is usually accompanied by a messy application and clean off down the track. Meguiar's Endurance, Gyeon Q2 Tire and Autoglym High Performance Tyre Dressing will all last the longest, but they are nasty to apply (sticky, messy) and difficult to remove (sticky, messy), they hang onto dust and will often sling onto paintwork.

The only solvent-based product I would recommend would be Carpro Darkside. It does still need more time to work into the tire, but it dries to touch and won't sling if levelled with a towel after a few minutes. Don't take any notice of the claimed durability of Darkside, its nowhere near that, but it will hang on even after rainy days.

For me, trading off that longevity for a cleaner, easier application and no sling is what I prefer these days. Carpro Perl sits in this category and is not terrible for longevity, in fact I have been told it lasts longer if diluted at 1:1 rather than used neat.

If you want to try something different, OG Tire Dressing and ADS Tire+ would be my selection here. These appear to last a little better than Perl, but with a similar look. I'd favor the OG product, it's slightly easier to apply and smells great. More expensive, but that 946ml bottle will last for many years.

And yes, initial prep is key, from then you only have to give them a quick scrub with a tire cleaner before reapplying a light coating.

From a story called "Biggest Stick", published in Wheels Magazine for the October 1971 edition. The car in question being the XY Falcon GTHO Phase III running down the Hume Highway. The image was famously doctored to show a lower speed for fear of public outrage. The story showed the car at redline in 3rd and 100 mph, not the redline in 4th gear and 140 mph. The truth was revealed a few years later and the real image published.








I've had the pleasure experiencing the XW GTHO Phase II, most having the Windsor 351 instead of the Cleveland 351. Due to the humble underpinnings, that thing felt so much faster than a modern GT, it was so raw, so noisy!

Of those, I really loved how Q2 Tire looked, but it would sling quite badly unless applied sparingly and buffed back with a towel. Ruining a pair of jeans from brushing against a tire was the final straw.

This was also about the time when I threw out the notion of "I must use this up before buying something new". So, this is where Onyx comes in. Compared to those sticky solvent dressings, the cream-like consistency of Onyx meant it was butter smooth to apply and required less effort to work into the tire and deliver a consistent finish. The delightful scent being the icing on the cake. Then, removal and cleaning doesn't stain my brushes.

Can't wait to try it . I do have Darkside and even KCx PSS (It is wonderful) but I really like water based for cleanup purposes... I agree, the Meguiars Endurance is awful, sooo sticky messy to apply and clean up after.. Never tried any Gyeon dressings...

You should the arguments I start when I call out Endurance as being totally awful. Bla bla bla, its best I have used, bla bla bla, it works just fine, bla bla bla........................................ah yes, but when did you last try something newer?..........................bla bla bla, I haven't. Ok then.

As I said, I did like how Q2 Tire looked but it had its drawbacks. Gyeon Tire Express I didn't care for, just didn't excel like others in my rotation.

Yeah I get that a lot. I have learned as I get older, always be open to new things. Detail supplies especially, the game changes constantly That's why I have been slowly purging my cabinet and either using up or regifting products I no longer care for or use regularly... Time to thin down the herd so to speak. Sad to say, some once were wonderful, but the new kid on the block is "better" As for Tire Express, I bought a bottle, but ended up putting in a raffle give away box (an entire Gyeon kit) a while back.... I do that a lot. I admin a local Cars and Coffee page and I always have a raffle gift for our gatherings. Excellent way to repurpose good products that I no longer need or use...

And that too is quite a statement, D but a vehicle can do that and I'll bet most reading this are shaking their heads in agreement as they've had one of those, too. :=)

I have those same feelings for Sarah, the S550 GT500. Without question, she is THE most amazing vehicle I have ever owned.

Loved Perl but after trying OG's product, I'm sold. The other vehicles will use up the Perl. :=)

<smiling> The mental image I had of you making that call was most humorous my friend but it was probably inevitable as even you can't use up all the old stuff before new stuff comes along. <grin>

Sorry about the result, D. I had a Canon G9 a long time ago and it was a decent unit. If it's in you to take another stab at it before your girl has to leave, you might try your phone camera if it's newer than the G7. Granted, you'd have to rig up a mount and that may be too much trouble or expense.
