The cut ends of a section of the chords can be seen in the photo.
Hello; I took another look at the picture in post #19 again. I may be mistaken about the threads being cut thru. may be the rubber is cut down to the threads and scored the surface of the threads. You (OP) have the tire and can look at the tire itself to make sure. If the threads are not cut thru the story changes some. Some less risk of sudden failure but still the threads are exposed.
If threads are not cut thru then the tire is still structurally sound. There remains a chance of something else getting to the chords. Might stuff something in the cut. I guess chewing gum or duct tape wont work. I wonder what might stick to the rubber and be flexible???

No way I'd run it across the street even. Those evenly spaced items your seeing deep in the cut are the cords that make up the structure of the tire. NOT SAFE

On a track day your tires pick up a bunch or marbles. It may seal you cut.

Also, modern tires have a bunch of plies on them and it looks like there’s material underneath.

Lastly, as long as you bring the carcass up to tempature in a stable way you’ll be ok. It looks like a MPSS or MP4S so your gonna run out of grip well before you get to the point of stressing the structure in a way that it’ll “Rapid Unschedule Dissasemble” as the Tesla folks use.

No way that tire would pass a proper tech inspection, it's very simple. Last thing you want on track is sudden tire disintegrating and dropping pressure. I would still use it for normal driving.

I’ve never been to a proper tech inspection that used street tires.

PS4S is a great tire for rain lapping, it's also perfectly fine for beginner and intermediate groups
Totally agree. As I’ve said, I’ve only had a proper tech inspection if I was in a classing event or qualifying for a license.

Everything else is a piece of paper that self techs more like a disclaimer that you sign.

It may be different in your region but HPDE events are like that out here.

I was at a race event earlier today with proper tech and although it’s hot AF out here, if it was raining they would have something a little more serious than a MPSS/MP4S

Yeah, the cords aren't cut through. But a couple do look scored. I agree tracking is probably a bad idea.

If it was still on the car I probably wouldn't lose much sleep over it for city driving, at least short term. I suspect it's been like that for a bit. All the same, it won't be going back on any time soon.

Maybe I'll just sell the whole set at a buy 3, get one free discount lol.

Yeah, it is different 😄. Licenced mechanic needs to fully inspect the car even for beginner group ahead of the event. One could always put a different set of wheels just for that of course. At least in the orgs I go to.

What I was trying to say is that this would be a no go from technical assessment standpoind, and it's like safety equipment - it's all good until it isn't.

EDITED WITH A BETTER PICTURE:

I was swapping out tires for a different size today, and noticed this when they took off the passenger rear. I had no idea it was there or for how long. It was obviously holding air, but the slice looks to be down to the thread ply. Only 3k on the tire. Is it toast? What would have caused that?

I just want to know if that one is safe to track with the slice in it.

It's not toast.

You ran over something sharp. Probably a piece of metal.

Track it!

Worst nightmare- tire blowout at any speed; best case it's a new rim, then new suspension parts after slam into a curb, or worst case slam into a wall or street sideways break neck or perish, or hurt someone else....all this risk for a single tire.

You need to ask yourself, it your life and safety worth cost of a replacement?

Don't be dramatic. It's not about cost. Im genuinely curious if the tire is worth keeping or not.

The plot thickness -

The inside of the tire right under the cut has an X drawn on it. Meaning, it was likely inspected on put on new with that cut. My guess is damage from shipping. The dealer put those tires on new as a condition on sale and probably got a discount on that one. Ive probably been driving like that for the last 3500 miles. A**holes. 🙄
