After literal weeks of waiting at the dealer for diagnosis (about 6 in total), the local dealer has determined that I need a new transmission and has ordered it - yay, factory powertrain warranty. That said, they don't know how long it will take to get a transmission. Does anybody know what the current status on transmissions is? Are they available? Unobtanium?

What happened to your transmission that needs it replaced?

Fifth gear was grinding, especially coming down from 6th - I assume that was a synchro. Also started having issues making lots of metallic noise in-gear and off-throttle, worse at higher RPMs especially in 1 and 2, and would pop out of first and second.

can you rebuild the oem? I would do that and make it stronger at a reputable shop with upgraded parts. I see people on here do it a lot.

Personally if I had the money, and a core *your oem functioning* as long as no hole in the thing, you could spend same amount of money and get it built into a bullet proof trans.

I lost the 5th gear synchro in my '19 GT350 in spring of '22 during a long road trip. The only symptom was that I couldn't shift into 5th gear without a little "grinding". We continued the drive home (~1000 miles) avoiding 5th gear, where we got it into the dealer.

My Ford dealer has a well-regarded transmission tech who rebuilt it - inspecting all parts and replacing what was needed. The parts cost was around $1000 and it took two months - mostly waiting for parts. No cost to me as it was under warrantly. It's been fine since then.

This is only the second time I've heard of a 5th gear synchro failing in a TR-3160. Seems a bit weird that my 5th gear would fail. On the highway, my 5th is just a pass-through gear to 6th. Although I track the car, it never gets into 5th, so 5th is my least-used gear.

Agree, I would expect a 2nd or 3rd gear synchro failure, not 5th.

I would guess the transmissions should be readily available considering they are using them in the Dark Horse (I hate saying and typing that name...what a dumb name).

Does the DH have rev matching like the Mach 1? I'm assuming that makes them a different part.

Call another Ford dealers parts department in your area and give them them the last eight of your vin. They can tell you availability from that. I wouldn’t mention its at another dealer.

...sees maybe 2-3 posts over the course of 8 years about the tremec and "Same issues!"!
Lol - the epitome of just WANTING to hate something. newsflash - these transmissions have proven very reliable. Anything mechanical can fail - and these rarely do.
