Hi i took the car out for a quick spin, come home and put gear lever in P but doesnt engage, asked a friend and he said he's had a similar problem earlier and told me to check the shifter cable clip beneath the car. I took a pic and sure enough I see the clip is broken.

My question is; Does anyone know where to buy a quality clip instead of this plastic piece of crap? Perhaps made of metal...
I only found this but its still made of plastic https://www.bushingfix.com/ford-mustang-shift-cable-bushing-repair-kit/

Also, I noticed this odd open hole right next to the linkage? Anyone know what it is cause it doesnt look right to me

That should be covered under warranty if you're still within the 3/36 or have an ESP. It *might* be covered under Powertrain since the linkage IS part of the transmission operation... If possible schedule a service appt. and see what they say when looking at it.

My guess is, as close proximity as the exhaust is, the heat coming off the exhaust is making that plastic part brittle and it will keep breaking.... via deterioration.

What does an unbroken part look like??

This is definitely a "new" finding with the 10R80, as I have not heard or seen this issue posted (yet), until now.

Since im a technician myself I will fix it myself as it only takes 5-10 minutes to replace once the car is up on the lift. But you are absolutely right about the plastic deteriating and falling apart due to constant heat/cold cycles. After doing some research it looks like Ford has been using this same crap design on all Automatic Mustangs since 2005.

A "unbroken" or new clip looks like this

I think I would be better off making some metal part myself than buying this cheap plastic for 25$ lol... This problem is not at all whats worrying me. People out there who might face the same problem in the future, here's what happens when the plastic clip breaks or unlocks itself; the gear lever will feel buttery smooth, no hard resistance at all and you wont be able to shift into P and S. All other D, N and R will work. But you will have to disconnect battery to shut the car off completely. The car will NOT throw any check engine lights or wrench lights if you have this problem.

Im more concerned about the hole next to the linkage? Theres thread in it so something must have fallen out?

Honestly the bushingfix part would be a good thing to try. Sure, it's still a plastic, but it looks like delrin which is much better, especially when it comes to heat resistance.

I guess I'll go ahead and buy it then. We seriously need some proper aftermarket metal replacement parts for these OEM plastic parts. Am starting to seriously get annoyed with these manufacturers making critical parts out of plastic, the next big thing will be to make the whole car out of plastic cause "oH mUhH tHe EnViRoNmeNt!!"

Thanks for the additional video and info. If you can, when you get the part to fix it, can you post more about your fix so others will have that info for future reference?

I'll also add this link to the main 10R80 thread too, it's beneficial info for sure.

Great, thanks! I'll link your thread in with the main 10R80 thread now, this way it's there for future reference and when you update here it will already come through if anyone looks at the link later.

This is definitely a new 10R80 issue and thanks again for bringing it to light!

It will be linked on Post 1, Page 1 of this thread:

We will probably start seeing it a lot more if it's a heat cycle related issue, the 2018s are knocking on 5 years old soon. I remember the 500 Abarth had a similar problem where shifter bushings degraded from heat cycles and failed, leaving you unable to shift. After installing the bushingfix part there was never a repeat failure.

@Nightmare5.0

Did you ever get the part and installed?
Hi Cobra Jet,

Yes I did get the part installed, unfortunately I completely forgot about this thread and taking pictures of the finished product.

However, I bought 2 of the clips from bushingfix.com, so I have some pictures here of the product, notice it's blue compared to the OEM Ford tan.

One more thing, I believe the very reason I experienced this problem is because my car had somehow lost the heatshield protection cover that goes over the clip. You can see on the very first picture that the OEM tan clip is fully exposed and it isn't supposed to be like that. So I bought a new transmission cable as well and took the cover and installed it as well, unfortunately cant buy the silver cover stand alone.
