It hasn't been a 20 cent difference for premium for years and years. It's more like 50-70c per gallon now. At least at branded stations.

FWIW I only put Shell premium in my car. I drive out of the way on road trips to find Shell stations if I have to. It's worth the extra cost to have my car run properly, even if I don't use all that power.

yeah that’s nuts. i’m pretty sure we’re looking at 30-35 cents here for 87 to 91. exxon’s by me are a joke; there can be a gas station up the road not even a mile and the exxon is 50 cents higher on REGULAR than anyone else.
plus i also make it a fact to never shop at a station that has a different credit price than cash. that’s bs.

Isn't Gen3 like 12:1 compression? Mine is on order (2022), but I was just presuming I'd need to run super (93 in Texas) unless maybe it's just a super low impact drive, like a road trip at sustained speed. I'd be willing to sacrifice power in that case, but not if it's going to cause audible knock.

i’ve never once heard audible knock on mine on 87 and yeah it is 12:1 i believe. 91 is probably perfectly fine too; i’m considering giving that a shot around here.

I can be comfortable with less HP on 87 octane fuel, but not at the risk of damage. Knowing how to determine the risk appears to be much harder now.
As my old boss would say, “you are totally wrapped around the axle”. Just to be totally clear……..

THERE IS NO RISK.

Just use you head. If you’re balls to the wall at the strip and/or track or multiple WOT runs on the street common sense says use premium. For day to day driving 87 I’d just fine and will not hurt anything.

This isn’t 1969. Yes our engines are 12:1 but with today’s electronics that doesn't factor into octane use. Be smart and use what you want.

My biennial trip to an American fuel station always confuse me a little, it normally follows these steps :
  • Pull up at pump, wonder what grade I should be putting in the hire car.
  • Decide on the cheapest grade (it's a hire car), start the faff with the credit card.
  • After a few mins, suddenly remember that the pumps don't like my UK cards and the process stalls when it asks me for my zip.
  • Remove card, go inside to pre pay.
  • Marvel at the selection of pills and little bottles at the cashiers desk that guarantee to keep me (and it) up all night, think about picking something, then chicken out.
  • Wildly overestimate the amount of fuel I want to prepay and triple check with the cashier that I wont be charged for it if I don't use it all.
  • Fiddle with the flip up leaver thing and get a bit frustrated with it, like a spotty teenager who cant drop his zip quick enough for his first BJ.
  • Now I get to look cool for a few mins, leaning against the car pretending I know what I'm doing.
  • That quickly changes to confusion when the pump shuts off and its about a quarter of the cost of doing it in the UK.
  • Drive off, silently worrying about how much they will charge my credit card.
  • Reassure the misses and kids that it was easy and all went to plan.

I think that will definitely show up after the first oil change, I am convinced Ford puts stuff from the factory to quiet the tick. My '19 and '20 both ticked/tick.

Off topic but I don't see how there can be a true equivalency chart like that.

The R in the US formula and RON in Euro ratings are "Research Octane Number".

There would be no point in doing motor (the M in the US formula) testing if you could just multiply the RON you already tested by .95x to get the same number as doing a completely different Motor test and then averaging them.

If such a ratio exists it only could if the fuels labeled by RON is refined in a common way that also resulted in the same M. But there is no doubt that different gas with a RON of x could have a different M. That was the entire reason for coming up with (R+N)/2! Therefore, there cannot be a true formula or even a table equating a RON value to a specific (R+M)/2 value.

So, I suspect those charts assume a common refining process that just happens to come close to a .95x ratio.

I don't understand paying near 50k and over for a car and trying to save 6 dollars a tank dumping 87 in it. It makes no sense at all.

What really makes no sense at all is equating the cost of a car with the cost and type of gas you use. I have friend who could buy a mustang with pocket change and will still use regular if that was all that was needed. That’s one of the reasons he can buy a Mustang with pocket change.

Your post cracked me up! But I wanted to mention that it took me a minute to understand what you meant by "hire car." Here we only use the word "hire" to refer to a person or company who provides a service. A car or other inanimate object can't be "hired," in America, it is rented, borrowed, or loaned :) (but yes I figured it out, just a funny thing about language differences)
