Are wheels and rims the same thing?


The terms "wheel" and "rim" are often used as words with the same or nearly the same meaning, but technically speaking it is not really so. ... The main difference between wheel and rim is that rim is not the whole wheel but only a part of the wheel. Key parts of the wheel are rim and disc.

No, the rim of the wheel is what the bead of the tire expands to when air is pumped into the tire. Guessed you missed High School auto shop.

lol. Nah. I worked at a tire shop for 10 years putting me through university. The description I gave sums it up correctly. But, it’s like splitting hairs. Those that look at diagrams and follow the line from the name see the edge as the rim. However, it actually means the whole thing. There’s a lip too. I’m sure you can find a name for the center part of it as well.
At least this is how things were many years ago at the tire shop. But hey, they may have changed in the last 30 years. Hell, the meanings of a whole lotta words have changed over this time to appease those offended by such a word.

spokes/disk white, optionally first 2" of barrel. Rest of barrel black.
I'm also partial to half the wheel being white and the other black. Like this.

blut cars come with orange wheels (or half 'raw' or dark silver, half orange). Flip for orange cars. Green cars with yellow, red cars with white, black cars with - oh who cares, black cars are a lost cause.

Rim is the outer edge of a wheel that holds the beads for tire mounting. Traditionally, the rim was welded or riveted to the wheel center or "disc. Together they are a wheel. A wheel & tire is a wheel assembly. Many newer wheels are formed as one piece, instead or two pieces. Rim is not the correct term for a wheel, but it is gaining social acceptance amongst the younger crowd.
