From my experience registering (standard stuff, not LLC) my personal vehicles at DMVs in Montana: if you don't have a Montana DL and proof of residency, you'll be turned away from all vehicle registration activities.

true…but the LLC gives you the proof of residency to acquire the DL 😉

don’t get me wrong, it’s a gray area that may not be worth your time…but I know at least 5 big money guys that do it thru Montana.

Good lord! If that LLC registration makes financial sense, you must be living in Beijing, Moscow ... or California!

And just as an aside: there may be an unintended consequence with insurance. Montana is infamous for its high auto insurance rates. Just a heads-up. (Too many critters crossing our highways!) But if you want to pay your registration fees to Montana and not use the roads, please do so!!! On behalf of all Montanans, I'd like to say a heart-felt THANK YOU!

I have Montana plates. Costs about $300/year once you are set up. Use the 49 folks. Not cheap but saves sales tax in the begining = about $3000 here.

In California, cops fuck w/ you when you have MT plates. I suppose if you have the DL and address to go along with it you can make it work, but I would still keep a low profile if you aren't exactly a MT resident.

very interesting. i was looking into this recently but realized it's too much a hassle and potential problems. this was insightful...

Why not simply have the LLC purchase the policy?

I’m not understanding the point of doing this at all. I grew up in Montana and and registered my cars there up until I retired from the military in 2018. What possible benefit is there to doing this? The registration taxes are ridiculous as it’s based on the value of the car. You’d be better off using Florida where a they base it off vehicle weight and you spend about $50 per year on registration.
Either way, you have to prove residency in either state.

oh that’s easy…
1) crazy registration fees in the home state
2) crazy smog rules in the home state
3) crazy tax rates in the home state

and the video just assumes the insurance company doesn’t know where the car is plated and/or garaged.

It's a loophole; people think they can use it to register out of state vehicles in that State while trying to beat their current home state motor vehicle laws and fees.
