Plate Registration in Two Different States (Scenario)

I'd definitely switch my insurance over to whichever state I'm living on as the insurance requirements are different in every state.

I just don't think I need to switch over my license plate for my cars staying in Ohio since they are never crossing the State Line into MA/CA.

No the cars you are not bringing can stay in the state they are in its just the ones you bring to mass that have to change

I'm a national insurance agent. You need insurance for the state that your car is registered. So if you have OH tags but get MA insurance we report to MA that you have insurance. They will not report to any other state. When you cancel your OH insurance they are going to report to the DMV that you insurance is cancelled. So basically it is going to look to the DMV that you no longer have insurance in that vehicle in the state it is registered. Most states suspend your plate and tags without insurance. That's a bigger mess than dealing with the legal ramifications for not bringing your license over.

So here's what I suggest. Keep OH insurance. It's some of the cheapest in the country. MA is ridiculous. Expect on average to pay $150-300 a month. Don't even think about FL. The highest in the country behind NY and MI.

Snowbirds do it all the time and nobody gives them any crap about it. They keep their Midwest and NE licenses and registration and spend many months in other places. Shouldn't be an different for you.

I don't think you can register a car to a different state than you have a license in.

Can't really pipe in my $0.02 for out of state plates and insurance and all of that. Not really sure what works or doesn't work, what you can get away with, etc. But I can say that there may be some states that you can register a car to in one state even though you have an out of state license. I moved out to UT and just dragged my ass for 3 years getting a UT license. I know you have 60 days to get it done, technically. And if you get pulled over, you can probably get harassed for it. But as far as the registration went out here, I transferred my truck over to UT registration and plates even though I had my CA license, and then I turned around almost a year later and bought my used '06 mustang under that same CA driver's license.

But, this may be something that varies from state to state. CA's DMV for example handled both your vehicle registration and driver's license, all one state department. In UT, I may have been able to more easily get away with registering a vehicle here with an out of state license because we have a DMV, and then a DLD (driver's license division). Two separate entities.

I am presented different state licenses on a daily basis. If I ask if they are just passing through and they say no, I live and work here, and I then ask do you have another residence in XX state, and they say yes, I leave them alone on it.

So if you REALLY are keeping a residence in OH, you should be fine. I most certainly would not go through the expense of switching over cars that will never see another state on a residential basis.

I hope that I don't have to make the switch over...Especially for the vehicles that are staying in Ohio.

Not sure if I'll be bringing my 15 or not. I may just bring my 14 F150 and fly under the radar and still be able to attend Mustang Week in the 15 without driving it across the country!
