I have a 2017 Mustang convertible 5.0. I have 18 inch rims and I like them.

I live in California and the closest snow is two hours away and if I was going to the snow I would just take my truck.

I do drive rather spirited with my car when I drive it, which is quite often.

I do like the comfort of my current all season tires but they are cheap ones that came with my car and I am ready to replace them.

iā€™m going to buy new Michelinā€˜s from Costco and I canā€™t decide between the Michelin pilot all season four or the Michelin summer tires.

What would be the pluses and minuses for each type of tire please?

The summer tires will grip better and wear out sooner and will be noisier.

The A/S should get 50K and noise is subjective.

Grip better for sure. Based on napkin math, I'm going to get at least 25k-ish on my PS4S set. I wouldn't call that wearing quickly. I don't notice any excessive tire noise either.
The excess noise I hear with PS4Ss is from the little pebbles in the street getting kicked up In the wheel well, (typically just in my neighborhood where the streetsweeper comes by less often). These are incredibly grippy tires šŸ˜

More noise then?

Any other thoughts out there?

Tough choice, but here are some pros and cons of summer only

pros

  • Summer tires are great is you race a lot or tracking
  • lots of choices/popular sizes
  • Grip and traction

cons

  • fast wear if you track/aggressively drive
  • rain and cold weather have to use caution
I live in an area of country with true seasons so I run 2 sets. I use all season for snow, cold in winter. Then each Spring I throw on the summer set with different rims.

So if you area hardly sees cold or snow or excessive rain go for the summer set or use my excuse and get both sets with some new rims....:handsinair:

OP, the question is what low temps do you experience in your area and how long does those temps last. Anything above about 45 degrees and the Michelin PS4S will be fine. If I only had a month or so of low temps, the Michelin PS4S would be my choice....heck in GA, I'm trying to decide on the Michelins, Conti Extreme Sport and the Nitto 555rii. Not leaning towards the Nitto though, as it is a drag radial and will probably wear pretty dang fast. With that having been said, if Velgen felt the need to give me a pair of rear VF5s in 11" width for the rear, I would buy both the Nitto and the Michelin for the rear and change them out every week or so lol.

The pilot all season 4 is geared towards dry performance, so you don't really give up THAT much compared to the PS4S. Every C8 Corvette comes with them. But given you live in California, there's no real reason not to run a dedicated summer all year. Just don't take the car out if it's below 40 degrees and you'll be fine.

Where I live its a bit different, I don't drive it in the winter, but fall and spring have pretty extreme temp swings at times. I like having the extra insurance of a "3 season" tire so I can keep the car out longer and bring it out earlier. Especially since I start work in the afternoon and get off in the middle of the night. Probably going to go with the AS4 for daily use, since I also like the 18's for comfort reasons.

Had the pilot sport 3 all seasons as factory tires on my fiesta st. They had amazing grip when they were new, but after about 3k miles they lost a lot of grip and still a ton of tread left. They didnā€™t feel bad at that point, just mediocre. But it was more of a drop off than youā€™d expect from street driving.

If you are pushing the summer tires on the street you need your car impounded.

I see many Mustangs and corvettes with expensive tires and I never see any of them running 5/10's. At least you are keeping Michelin in business.

When you are taking 30 MPH posted curves at 90 you are reckless.

Off my soap box.

Wasn't too long ago some asswipe killed a family running on a backroad in Morning view Ky. Cops used the car's black box to convict him.

I'm thinking about going to Nitto NT555G2 when the time comes. A friend of mine has them on his hellcat, they seem to work pretty well on his car considering it makes quite a bit more torque than I do.

I'm not clamping down on anyone, but if you think you can safely drive these cars at 7/10's on the street you are ignorant.

7/10ths is 3 tenths less than 10 tenths.
