Mustang Logo - Weird Legs?

I never noticed this until now. When I first saw it I thought it was a mistake, I thought it might be just a clumsy copy of the logo, but then I realized that's actually how the logo looks.

Why is the fourth leg missing? Why does the pony have just three legs, and an abrupt cut where the fourth should be?

You need to look up a picture of the actual emblem. It becomes pretty apparent that that bump and the funny shape on the front of the rear leg is the fourth leg. Hard to decipher it in a 2 dimensional image.

Indeed, in 3D it seems to make sense.

I've ordered a custom dash emblem recently, which was supposed to include the pony logo. After several iterations the design was perfect, and then the emblem was produced and shipped. And this morning, having nothing better to do, in anticipation of the real thing I looked again at the picture and saw that detail and was horrified. Oh my god, what the hell is that? They've got it wrong!
But then I looked at the OEM emblem and was relieved to note that it looked the same.
So, of course, the question arose: why does it look like that?
