2010 GT500 , 2015 Z06 Corvette , 2019 Widebody Hellcat Challenger
Good Day . New to the forum but not new to Shelbys . We have a 2010 GT 500 and my wife is thinking of trading to a newer car . Seeing as the new GT500s have auto trans , she wont even look at them so that leads us to GT350s . How do the 2010 GT500 and newer GT350s compare ? Is it worth doing the swap?

Dang, I came in here hoping you wanted to trade your GT350 for my Mustang GT. :wink:

I haven't driven an S-197 GT500, but the GT500s I've been on track with (road course) were slow compared to a GT350. They were not faster on straights or corners. The specs may say those GT500s are faster in a straight line, but after a couple laps they must get heat-soaked. That's the only explanation I have. This is from a few different track days when I owned my 2016 GT350 tech pack. But maybe you and your wife don't care about that.

The GT500 will be easier to make black marks on the street with I assume, but I didn't buy my GT350 to do that. For just being in a random gear and nailing it to feel acceleration I'm sure the GT500 is better. The GT350 has very tall gears and it will not feel like you have a massive, low RPM engine in it. The engine wants to wind out to get to the power. There's good and bad there. It makes the car really tame at low RPM and a monster up high. If you are looking for a street monster I don't think it's the best choice.

Edit: a couple more things - in my opinion the brakes on the GT350 are amazing. Their power is not needed on the street, but if you are anything like me you will notice and love their feel and the immediacy. When you touch the pedal the brakes are there NOW. Clutch pedal is very light on the GT350 but IMO feels much better than other Mustangs I've driven. And the last adder - suspension firmness IMO is perfection on the GT350. Body motions are extremely well controlled.

Frankly - I do think the S-197 cars are better looking from most angles than the S-500. I'm probably in the minority here with that opinion. But I saw an S-197 on the highway the other day and I missed my 2011 GT.

You should drive a GT350 with your wife. IMO listening to the engine is a great experience. Maybe drive a regular GT as well. I realize Covid is a PITA, but it's a big decision.

I sold my 2010 GT500 to get my GT350. It is such a better car. I have no regrets at all. Beats out the S197 GT500 in every aspect except acceleration. That can be fixed with a simple whipple instal. I say go for it. you'll love it.

I sold my 2010 GT500 to get my GT350. It is such a better car. I have no regrets at all. Beats out the S197 GT500 in every aspect except acceleration. That can be fixed with a simple whipple instal. I say go for it. you'll love it.
I went from a 700 hp 2008 GT 500 ( slightly modified). To a 2017 GT350 and I would do
It again.
The 350 has less power but it puts it down much better and feels more planted. Plus, those cooled seats are great !!

You could park a GT500 & GT500 CFTP in my driveway and you would still need to pry the key fob from my dead hands. The Voodoo & Manual! Enough said... itā€™s not always about how much you spend, itā€™s about enjoying what you spend it on! My $0.02

Thanks for the reply . Problem for us is where we live . Way north in Ontario Canada . Not too many GT350s around , those that are are typically South in Toronto ( at least a 6 hr drive ) . I do agree about the sound of the exhaust . One of my friends had a GT350 last year and it sounded amazing . I do love the look of them and the stance . Im just thinking about missing the low end torque compared to the GT500 .

How do they compare say if your driving down the road in 4th gear at 50 mph and mash the pedal , no gear change allowed lol

You wont be in 4th goin 50 in a gt350... more like 2nd... with 2-3 grand to go before u hit redline.... lol! This isn't the car you lug around at lower rpms, mash throttle, and get thrown back in your seat... it needs to be 3500-4000 rpm before you get into its powerband.... just look at any dyno sheet... this is the car that you are breaking the average speedlimit in 2nd gear at 5000-5500 rpms, mash pedal, get pushed back in your seat and have 3 grand more to play with before to rev out and shift to 3rd.
I dont own a 350 but have driven a few friends multiple times. They both came from last gen gt500's.
They are completely different cars. Both my friends said they don't miss their 500's at all. Its just a learning curve on how to drive the car and get the most out of it. If you want that "punch" when u hit the skinny pedal, you just learn to "cruise" or "lug" around at 3500 rpms instead of 1500-2000 like you would in a 500.
The power is def there. Just in a different way.

I came from a 660whp 2009 GT500 and I can tell you that if you try this in the GT350 you aren't going to be impressed. You have to remember that this car will rev out another 2250 rpm. Even in the GT500 I'd want to be in 3rd to try that and 4th wouldn't be all that impressive.

How do you intend to use the car? If you're going to cruise straight flat highways a few months out of the year (judging by your location) then a newer S550 with a VMP blower kit may be more up your alley. This car really shines when it comes to finding some good curvy roads, but the feel can make any road special. If you get your thrills from bottom end torque and rolling burnouts, and it seems you do judging by the other cars in your ownership, this isn't the car for you.

You are not alone sir! If I didnā€™t have my 350 due to cost or some other factor, the option car would not be a S550 GT. I would be driving a S197 something. And it would be a ā€˜11-ā€˜12 at that. Love the car. My son has a ā€˜12 right now and I love driving that thing, as silly as it sounds.

And now back to your regularly scheduled program already in progress...

You mean you get to use an awesome gearbox?

Maybe this isn't the right car for you...
You miss understand me , i also have a 2015 Z06 thats far from stock . In stock form , other than using 7th gear , mash the throttle in 5th or 6 th at 50 or 60 mph and it would go like crazy . I swapped the blower to a Pro charger , now , you have to use the gears as it doesn't have the extremely low end torque of the PD blower . See what i mean , right gear for the occasion . It dosent bother me one bit but the GT500 is my wifes car . I was the one that suggested to her to get one . I told her the car is mostly high RPM compared to the low end grunt on the GT500 . I guess we will have to wait till summer time to try one somewhere and form an opinion
