While this is undoubtedly true, if I read Mark's post correctly he's not wondering at having received the letter (which, as you say, is usual practice), but rather at Ford's strange suggestion of replacing his hot Focus ST with a stupid, dreary, low-cost crossover.
I don't think they care what they put him in, as long as it's new and it's from them. And these days with small SUVs and crossovers that are the easy sells it's no surprise that that's what they're going to pitch first and foremost, to everybody. As far as they're concerned, Mark is just another customer . . . another 'mark' to an opportunistic sales team.

I'm sure they don't care what they put him in, but how can they imagine that a car enthusiast (which a Focus ST suggests) in his right mind would even consider that? :)

You have to remember that the dealership sales crew doesn't think the way we do when it comes to doing their job. To them, the Focus is mostly just another used car, albeit one that might exert some pull on potential used car buyers to come in and kick a few tires. I've even been told at least once that they have a potential buyer for my Mustang already lined up.

All this feels like a new wrinkle on "let's put you in something new and improved", where they're getting the "what am I going to do with the car I already own" part into the deal up front rather than during negotiations.

There's more . . .
Given that Ford doesn't even want to build sedans any more - Fiesta and Taurus are already gone, and unless something unexpected happens Focus and Fusion are on the chopping block. Meaning that Ford would prefer sedan sales to continue to drop rather than rise, to the point of helping the trend toward SUVs/CUVs continue. Meanwhile, the dealerships are still going to want to have used sedans coming in because of the quarter to half a million people each year who will still buy a sedan but not an SUV or CUV.

i got one from my local ford dealer (who i do not buy from, but travel 30 miles away to buy and service my cars) saying they wanted to buy my 2012 mustang boss 302...
they wanted to give me the highest KBB value plus 10%..... they said their starting trade in price for my "boss" was $12,500.00 plus the 10%.
LOL, so under $14,000 for a BOSS 302... They are certifiably insane!

There is nothing humorous about the humerus, especially if it is broken. Also, the "funny bone" is actually the ulnar nerve as it runs through the medial epicondyle of the distal humerus and is decidedly not humorous when struck.

I'm holding on - at least I get to go to work - however, my 16 year old son may go full on Shining. School is cancelled until 4/30 and the governor shut down all the stuff teenagers want to go to.
