Anyone Else Hunting For Snow Tires?

As mine is a year round daily driver, I've starting thinking about snow tires. Usually, I'd just go down a couple of sizes, and use the 18 inch rim from the regular GT or EcoBoost. However, as we have those bloody big Brembos, that won't work. So, do I just use the 19's and try to get 19 inch snow tires, which I think might be more rare, or do I go up to 20's, which likely have more options available.

The idea of a 275 width snow tire on a rear wheel drive car up here doesn't sit well with me.

What are you guys planning?

How do you like the Nokians? I had Blizzak WS80s (which were fantastic in snow and on ice, but obviously snow tires in the dry) and Michelin X-ice 3s (which were great on dry roads, but just so so in the snow). Nokian's have always been something I wanted to try.

I picked up four 245/45-19 Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 tires on Ford Performance 19x9 Boss 302 wheels last month, and they're waiting out back for the weather to get cold enough for me to put them on.

I've been on Blizzak WS tires for the last 10 years and absolutely loved them on BMW xDrive cars in DD mode, but since the Mustang is now the "fun / spare" car with my Tacoma doing the DD work, it has performance snows instead of true snow tires.

I had Nokians about 12 years ago on my Passat. Nice in the slick stuff, but they were terrible for wear. They didn't perform as well as the Blizzaks in deeper snow (I had both on the Passat at various times), but they were certainly solid in bad weather.

I ran 20x9/10.5 and all seasons 245/35/20 and 285/30/20 on my 15 Gt for 4 winters daily driver. I was going to use the oem 19s since they are ugly af for winters on oem 19" sizes

Are you sure those are 8.5 and not 9? I have 4 boxes of them in my garage and they say 9in

I'm planning to wrap them in Blazzaks. They were amazing on my Mach1.

You're right, I: just checked - they are 9" wide.. I run Hakkas on the Mustang and BMW; studded iPike's on my 4WD Ram 1500. I only put 3,000 miles a season on the Hakkas, so wear is unknown. I think the non-studded Hakka's are as good as the studded iPikes; but it's been years since i've tried Blizzaks. I think if one runs Michis, Blizzaks, or Hakkas you can't go wrong- less so with Pirelli snow rubber. I have a brother in the tire biz and get a great deal on the Nokians :-)

I checked with my tire guy yesterday. If we did 245/45-19s, there were a bunch of options. Bridgestone LM32 was the most expensive for what he carried. Then all the usual suspects like Continental, Toyo and down to Nexen at about half the price of the Bridgestone.

So now I just have to figure out what I want.
