That's the government's pigeon-hole description of the car. Let's just ignore the government, they're a bunch of morons.
I agree and so does the dictionary. I’ve always considered a “sports car to be a true 2 seater.

It's funny to me how quickly we get off track in almost every thread.

Personally I would love to see Heads Up Display on the Mustang, that would be very nice indeed.

Hey, that’s not nice. I used to be one of those Jaguar driving putz’s. I was schooled by my dealer about how to pronounce it. No such issue with my Ford dealer. :like:

I'm bored, so:
Number of seats, usually.
"Usually". -"Historically" sportscars are 2 OR 2+2 seaters. So by that definition, it can be considered a sportscar.

The first Mustang was a straight-6 and the first V8 was not called a "GT". So the GT designation has nothing to do with the chassis and platform of the car. Mustangs have been I-6, V8, V6 and I-4s. So are you arguing the "Gran Touring" label is engine dependent?

A Lotus Esprit started life as an I-4 and ended life as a badass TT V8. I don't think anyone would disqualify it as a sportscar because it had an I-4.

GT cars have "historically" been expensive and fast luxury cars. The Mustang is not expensive, it's an affordable car. The Mustang is not luxurious, by modern standards it does not compare to luxury brands like Lexus, Aston Martin, Ferrari, Bentley. That's not to say that it can't go 150mph (and not much faster) or not comfortable with leather seats, but it does not fit the classic description defined by the category:

"The grand touring definition implies material differences in performance, speed, comfort, and amenities between elite automobiles and those of ordinary motorists."

Due to the production numbers and affordability, Mustangs are "ordinary motorist vehicles".

+1 here. I just went from headlight to tail light and, quite frankly, I find my car almost perfect.

A bigger gas tank
Stiffen up the chassis
Shed some pounds
Make it a hybrid and get some power to the front wheels
550 HP NA DOHC
HUD would be cool
You can have an optional DCT, but keep the stick option for we Luddites

For those wanting weight reduction. Who says they never made a 2,800 lb Mustang.

Definitely felt a weight reduction in my wallet just looking at that!

As an old guy, I think of a sports car as a Triumph TR3, MGB, Austin Healey 3000, Datsun 240Z, and, of course, the Corvette. That said Ford considers our car a sports car. How about we all agree that our Mustangs are “FUN” cars.

That said, here is a good article regarding this topic.

And from MW

No such thing as a 4 seat sports car.

Coming from a 90 Miata Turbo...I would like Ford to cut some weight from the next platform. I never had my Miata weighed but would estimate around 2200-2300lbs. My 18 convertible is probably around 3900lbs so 1600-1700lbs more than a Miata seems insane to me. 3500lbs would be a reasonable target. Maybe incorporate all aluminum body work like the F150? They have the technology but it is a uni-body so that makes it much more difficult. However that aluminum hood on my 18 is damn heavy for what it is, so not sure what Ford is doing wrong with the stamping on this. My Miata had an aluminum hood that was like a feather in comparison. With that being said, luxury and safety are heavy and we all like those two traits these days.
One other thing...more torque below 3K would be a nice plus also.
