so got my excise tax bill from Massachusetts yesterday and they valued my car at 58500?!? That’s way over sticker crazy they want 1450.00 so went to the town where I send the bill in and they said that the price is dictated by the state and they said it did seam strangely high And they said I should fight it but I would have to go to the RMV they are the worst I might just pay instead of going that route ( they did say they had a Bugatti excise bill was 67k!!!)

Don't pay it. Fight it. I'm all for lazyness but not when it comes to money. You worked for it, don't let them steal it.

Just out of curiosity what was your MSRP? I would guess it was at least $51,000.
Do you pay sales tax on the car when you buy it? I had to pay about $2500 but its only $30 per year to register it.

I would take your original Window Sticker and the new car dealer invoice showing the breakdown of costs and fight it. As others have said, why are you just going to “pay it”, when you could be paying an incorrect calculated amount???

Yea, speaking of freaking taxes on vehicles.... here in NJ when buying a new car, we get hit with:
1) Tire tax
https://www.state.nj.us/treasury/taxation/motorv_over.shtml

2) The actual “Doc Fees” are now taxed. Prior to July 1, 2017, Doc Fees were NEVER taxed (page 3, item 7)
https://www.nj.gov/treasury/taxatio.../New-Jersey-Consumer-Automotive-Tax-Guide.pdf

3) State Sales Tax @ 6.625% as of 2018

4) Title fee

5) Registration fee

6) Temp Tag fee

7) If applicable: Luxury Tax surcharge of 0.4% of gross selling price if $45k+ or sub 19 mpg combined

8) Plate transfer fee (transfer of existing license plate from old vehicle over to new vehicle)

Brand new car in Massachusetts will have a super high excise tax bill the first year, then it goes down every year. Pluses and minuses to wherever you live. I moved the FL to get away from the cold and snow from Massachusetts and love the weather, there is no excise tax or income tax.......BUT homes are very expensive and wow the insurance on homes with hurricanes. I paid an average of $800 a year for home owners insurance in Massachusetts on a 280K home. Here in Florida it's around 6K! So you pay no matter where you live one way or another.

Don't forget the "gas guzzler tax" that most of us get slapped with...

The Mass RMV database has a lot of holes in it. As an example, my wife's 2004 Outback was classified as a much higher value based on an error in the RMV's VIN decoding. The RMV thought that when the engine in the VIN decoded as a "3.0 H6" that she had a higher value "Premium" model. The reason for this was that when the RMV set the Outback up in the database, the only cars that had the H6 were the Premium models. When Subaru began selling the H6 separately, the Registry wasn't paying attention and overpriced the cars with it. All it took was the window sticker to get the price corrected. Annually.

Some thing is probably happening here. At a guess, they think the VIN you game them decodes as a GT350 and are pricing accordingly. You need to get them to reset you back to a GT for this bill. And will likely need to do so every year.

I thought NY was crazy...this is insane. You should pay tax on what you actually paid. Maybe they have it confused with a GT350?

In Massachusetts, you pay 6.25% of the invoiced cash-exchanged sales price to the state as sales tax at the time of initial registration. In addition, you pay 2.5% of the depreciated market value of the car every year (including the year of purchase) to your local town as an excise tax.
