So, it seems like it's up in the air if the car is totaled or not. I'm HOPING it is seeing as 2 airbags deployed and I'm looking for an upgrade from the v6 after having it for years. (Feel free to throw in your opinion on it being totaled or not)

I am thinking of picking up a 2018 Mustang GT (auto) and was curious on any tips for buying a new mustang from the dealer or things to lookout for on the newer mustangs (this will be my second car I've ever bought so I'm sure I can use some wisdom from experience buyers)

Thanks!

Sorry about your luck & hope everyone is ok.

Don't know why it would be totaled, how hard was the collision..?

Just based on the pictures, I'm honestly surprised that those airbags went off. I'm not saying it's a bad thing - more often than not I see cars in accidents that didn't have the bags deploy when they definitely should have.

As for totaled vs not, it's a tough call. The fact that it's a 2011 will work in your favor if you're hoping for it being totaled. With that said, I've seen cars with FAR more damage not get totaled.

Edit: Somewhat off topic - how does the seat airbag work? Does it supplement the side airbag and fill a similar space, or is it designed to wrap in front of the driver a bit more?

Just myself received some burnlike injuries on my inner forearm from the airbag, other then that everyone involved was uninjured thankfully!

The collision was roughly 30-40 MPH hitting a vehicle moving less then 10 MPH, The only reason I'm thinking totaled is from the 2 airbags going off on top of the bodywork.

That's what the insurance rep said on the phone it looks like it's right on the fence, which makes me want it to lean more totaled as selling a vehicle with airbag deployment significantly lowers resale value I'm sure.

I was VERY surprised the airbags went off especially the driver seat one, I'm not sure it's purpose as I didn't feel it at all so maybe it's more to help with side impact and empty space but this was a complete front bumper to rear bumper collision, no side impact.

I would be worried about the 2018 GTs since they have the death rattles and engine ticking issues. There is a poll that is showing that a majority of cars have these issues.

Couple of suggestions:
- not sure what the value is currently if your car prior to wreck or after - you can file a claim with the at fault’s insure for lost value. Did this once before and while a PITA might be worth looking into. Your insurance company might not be much help here since none of them are fans of this - had to pursue on my own. Assuming you were in IL, that’s where I lived when this happened, not all states treat this the same.
- shop all over the country or at least as far as you are willing to go for a deal. Some dealers have 5-10 of these cars while others may have 39-40. Granted I had a lot of help but best deal was a plane ride away, saved me literally thousands.

So I mention the death ticking engine and get a bigger discount right? I did see one video on that, do you happen to have a link to the poll?

Thank you that's extremely helpful, it was her fault, so I will be speaking with her insurance again (it did occur in IL) unfortunately she is not claiming fault so I will have to wait for the police report, but fortunately she did receive a ticket for failure to yield. Might need to do some more research on determining diminished value to argue to her insurance.

I have been using car - dot -com and doing nation wide searches, I would say my driving limit is 150-200 miles, but always open for the extremely good deals.

I wouldn't say they are way faster... slightly faster at best.

Keep it, Coyote swap it, and turn it into a great car. That's not totaled (unless you have a generous adjuster).

Get a 2019. The 2018s “are” epic, but for all the wrong reasons. :cwl: Also check out the Camaro SS and maybe some of the Challengers. There is more out there than Mustangs.

Just an FYI. A fair diminished value payout works out better the longer you keep the car after the accident because of normal depreciation of cars. So extreme case just to show this: get diminished value award for $10k on an almost new $50k car, drive the car until one never in an accident is worth $20k. At that point the same car in an accident is not worth the $10k less you collected up front. Of course that assumes you were not already looking to change cars.

...all 2018 engines should have "ticking", as they are now partially direct inject.

Or are we not talking about injector ticking noises?
