yep. non-Rs get either black or white borders depending on the stripe color

Meh, I don’t know if that’s completely accurate. I’ve seen a couple of magnetic cars with blue stripes and red border, non-R. Only color I recall seeing it on, but I’ve seen it.

Only R’s get red border from the factory. A lot of guys like red bordering and add it to their non-R.

If you see red edging on a stripe, and it's not an R, it's probably an aftermarket stripe like big worm graphics.

Keep in mind that some R's cannot get Red pinstripes under any circumstances and that comes when ordering R models in Race Red or Ruby Red.

I could be wrong but I don't recall Competition Orange being an optional color for the 2016 R's and if it was certainly a Red pinstripe would not have been available.

Correct the race red R’s did not come with red stripe. I believe they came with a gloss black pin stripe.

I could be wrong but suggest that stripes were not available on Race Red R's just as they were not on the Ruby Red R's.

Yes, for '17 MY if you see stripes on Race Red or Ruby Red R's, then it has to be aftermarket. Don't know if the same goes for '18 MY.

Still the same for MY2018... the R versions in Race, Ruby, and OFury cannot be factory optioned with any type of OTTS.
