Hello. Just started a different newbie post about tunes. Converter time...

I have talking with Circle D about models for my car.

They recommend the 5C or the 4C. 245 mm. Car will likely be NA for a long time (unless I find a smoking deal! Or used)

Daily driver. Convertible.

Any regrets with your choice of converter? Did the car need a tune after the converter install? Planning a tune (see that section). Does a converter play nice with the Ford Power Pack 2 or stick with one of the known tuners?

Will the car still be docile enough for my wife to drive?

Really, in looking at the options for converters, there’s really only a few out there with the best known as Circle D. Anyone try anything different?

Will there be much difference instreetability between the 5C and 4C? How much is left on the table between them? I know, been discussed over and over. I guess my only experience is with a Vortech C4 fox body car. Not really the same though. Only half the gears lol!

Thanks for looking! Hopefully get some more insight and advice into this!

Circle D is a really good convertor but FTI makes a good convertor also.and from.what I have heard from buddies the FTI is a little more tame on the street. Both are pretty expensive so just do.some research on both.

Thanks.

Tame in what way? Do you know what his stall speed is?

Ok good to know. Apples to apples I guess. How was it more tame? Could it have been the tune and how aggressive the shifts were set?

Ok. Doing my due diligence I emailed a different converter company that makes custom converters and had a discussion with him.

Discussed the exact set up as with Circle D. He said the most or highest he would recommend would be a 3600. Said a 4000 was way too much. Said that the 3600 would still be loveable on the street and the 4000 would slip too much.

Now I’m back in the dilemma stage lol.

Any thoughts?

I would shout out to beefcake or Circle D themselves and see what they recommend.

I have a Circle D 2C on my car because that's what the shop chose to put in and I wasnt very knowledgeable on converters at the time so I had no input, but now that seems like a very low stall haven't seen any other people running a 2C yet, most recommend higher. I feel like I left power on the table.

How hard the shifts are is tune related and not so much the convertor. The only downside I have seen with the after market convertor is they fully lock in 2 gear and when in slow stop and go.traffic it kind of a pain. The car shifts up to 3rd way to fast for my liking and kind of Boggs the car down.Ive been told this happens with other convertor also.U can put it in.sport mode and it holds the shifts a little longer but then u get weird downshifts.Thats the only downside I have found to using a stall convertor, which most could probably be fixed with the tune, but most tuners say that's normal or iif we change it your car may lose some et/mph lol.

Ok. Now I’m a little confused.

I talked to a very reputable Mustang high performance shop in Ontario about their recommendations for a converter and installation. They advised against putting in any converter unless the car was going to be a heavily used track car - every weekend etc - as it would ruin the cars streetability. We discussed what I was hoping to achieve with the car as far as performance and use etc.

Recommended their in house tuner on their in house dyno, cat back and air intake and putting in a rear gear ( I have 3.55 now) but advised against any converter.

Worrisome I feel... this isn’t a fly by night outfit but have a very solid reputation and have been racing mustangs for 30 years.

So... what now as far as converter? Hear so many great things but is there anyone here that regrets doing it? Is it poor day to day driving?

I know, that’s been asked a thousand times, but a reputable shop advised against it due to streetability. This was between the 4C and 5C - 3600-4200 range. He advised against ANY stall.

Thank you for your insight!!!!

I run a 4c. Love it. To best put this to bed and get you off the fence and away from everyone else's opinion, try to find someone in you area that has one. Go for a ride with them, buy lunch if you have to, and then make up your own mind.

Exactly!

I’ve posted in this section and also the Ontario section looking for someone’s with a converter to go for a spin... no one has come up yet. Hopefully someone will soon... people still have their cars stored for the winter maybe.

Damn, you’re in Florida... should have my father in law drop by and go for a spin. But if it’s one of them there gas guzzling big motor ear hurting and low veeehicles I may not get an unbiased opinion... so... anyone in Ontario want to offer a ride?

Thanks!!!!

I'd find a new shop to be honest. There's plenty of people that daily cars with aftermarket converters with no issues, myself included. Driveability is fine.

That being said it may also have to do with the tune. The converter is adjusted via the tune so a converter that's not set up properly may very well be uncomfortable to drive on the street. But go with a reliable tuner and they seem to know what they're doing just fine.

Maybe that shops tuner just cant tune them very well for street use  Which comes to another point, be careful with tuning there in house. Talk to the tuner, ask how they handle the knock sensors and fueling, etc. Alot of shops, even mustang specific shops, tune coyotes incorrectly. Hence why I went with a well-known tuner for our cars (Lund).

What converter are you running? Different kettle of fish with the Procharger though.

I will have it tuned by one of the top companies on this board for sure. I agree, I do wonder if their in-house tuner has experience and knows what he is doing with the Coyote.

I’m still hoping to find someone close by to go for a spin. Satisfy myself I guess...

I have a Circle D 245mm 2C, semi-daily driven and drivability is fine.

The only downside I notice is if I'm *trying* to be quiet around my neighborhood at night, it's pretty difficult. It takes more to "get the car going" at low throttle, so RPMs are higher.
