real men let the cars do the driving so they can fingerbang their girlfriends :) no but real the new 10 speed is the only reason I can see buying a 18 over the 17 for me personally
Haha I dated a girl who was impressed I could do that to her while driving manual. It's hard though.

or is the gearbox trying to break traction all the time?
All that is 100% controlled by your right foot. The gearbox is not breaking traction on it's own, it's dictated by the driver.

That said, if you do competitive driving (whether drag racing or road racing) and want ever single ounce of performance it's a no brainer. The 10 speed will beat the manual in all aspects of performance (especially this year where the MT82 got neutered with only 4 underdrive gears).

If you're looking for fun, manual is of course still the best choice but nothing wrong with an auto if you're looking for the most performance. There's a reason most (if not all) forms of professional racing are doing it with autos.

I'm a die-hard manual fan. I learned to drive on a stick and all but a few of my (several dozen) vehicles over the years have been manuals.

But the 10-speed? That might change my mind. Other than nebulous concepts of fun and driver control there is legitimately no reason to choose three pedals. The AT is faster and returns better economy with fewer wear components (e.g. clutch) and is less prone to user error.

I emphasize that when I bought my GT I absolutely wouldn't have it with an auto.

If I were buying now, though -- who knows?

I'm wondering how they will hold up once boosted.

To fit 10 gears in the same space as 6, they have to be thinner/smaller. Also curious if the torque converter is the same, thats what broke on my 6R80.

Looks cool as hell and super fast but ... I'd still get a stick.

The first two production vehicles with the 10-speed were boosted: F-150 Raptor (Turbo) and Camaro ZL1 (Supercharger)

I have not had chance to drive the 10 speed in the mustang, its terrible in all the f150s I've driven.

Can you drive safely in drag mode on twisty roads, or is the gearbox trying to break traction all the time?
I would use sport plus in the twisties.. Drag mode is good for flooring it in a straight line...not much else lol

this article says the transmission has "adaptive learning cycle"

http://www.f150hub.com/trans/10r80.html

I would be tempted to get the 10 speed.

torque rating, 590.05 lb ft

1st gear 4.69 :
2nd gear 2.98

compare that to :

"Unconfirmed MT-82 D4 gear ratios for 2018: 3.24; 2.10; 1.42; 1.0; 0.81; 0.62

"2.66 and 2.97 ratio Tremec T-56 magnum

Our first '18 3.5 eco had 2500 miles before we traded it for a 2.7 eco, the 3.5 with 2500 miles drove exactly the same as the 2.7 with 700 miles. Very clunky shifts, but the downshifts when slowing are what we are having the most issues with.

I do like how it stays in the power band, but I never felt like the 6 speed was in too high of gear.

IMO our '15 with the 6 speed was much smoother.

The higher gears are probably to save mpg, even if marginal. But the 1st gear is a lot shorter than the MT82. Aftermarket 4.11 won't make up the difference. The higher torque manual transmissions tend to have even taller first gears.

The ZL1 unit is more heavy unit than the one in Mustang, and assumingly the Raptor one is also. So that's not a good indication of how well the Mustang transmission will hold up, but a better indication of what it can be made to hold.

That Drag mode does full torque changes, if you are steering straight ahead.

If you are turning the wheel (in Drag mode) I got the impression from one of the Widmann videos that the changes were more subtle to avoid breaking traction in the corners and spinning off.

All clever stuff and nice to have very positive reviews from actual owners (rather than theory and expectations from the likes of me and almost all of the contributors to this thread).
If I can find a big enough empty space I will test lol

ZL1 A10 is rated at 650 lb ft. I think the regular A10 is 590.

We need Raptor engine for the Mustang:
Engine: 3.5 L V6
Horsepower: 450 hp
510 lb-ft
