I’m curious about what makes sync 3 better. I have a base system and think it is fine except the screen size. I have never even used the voice commands. If sync 3 has something worth while I wouldn’t mind spending the extra money but I am not very tech savvy so I need some help.
Plain and simple; speed, resolution, functionality. MFT doesn’t interface with your phone as well as S3. Android Auto and Car Play allow a complete interface without compromise. The tables in which you navigate through the system make more sense. The layout of S3 is intuitive, MFT is not. S3 is faster. The resolution of MFT vs S3 is crap. We tested two systems, S3 v MFT and the it failed the contrast test. S3 has a better touchscreen. The voice commands and information provided with the latest iOS update are much better. Version 3.0 offers improved and upgraded AA function.
Ford has done an excellent job of advancing Sync to the point that what was cutting edge (MFT vs Sync v1.0) is now obsolete in comparison to S3 v3.0

What is the best route for both cost and ease of installation at this point to get Carplay in my base model S550?

i personally did the base to sync3 swap.... parts were around 700 and took me about 3 hours of labor.... the parts for car play is another 100ish.

sure you can go aftermarket with a metra kit but it doesnt look factory and they are still having issues with the boards.

I have sync3...with sat......apple car play 3.0 all for around $800 and its all factory parts.

That’s not terrible at all. Did you use the instruction in the first post of this thread?

You need to supply 12v pin 1 Ground pin 37 and HS-CAN. If it doesn't turn on without re-pinning it's no good.
I'm trying to get a unit to power on to test also. I've got power to pin 1 and ground to pin 37 and 54. Nothing's happening. Anything else? How many amps does the unit need to power up?

Pin 54 is not a ground. You need to supply HS1 and HS3 CAN to the unit to power it on. Unless you have a test bench with a CAN gateway module you’ll have to do it in the car.

Thank you. I thought there might be a way to power the unit up outside the car just to test.

Not without a gateway. If you have ever done aftermarket stereos you’ll have seen they use a red turn on wire. The CAN takes the place of that in newer Fords.

Okay, here is what you need to change for a Sync 3 upgrade from base, including some optional stuff.

This is assuming you are keeping the Base ACM.

ACM:

727-01-01 Factory: D800 2800 00, after Sync 3 Swap: 9800 3800 00

BCM:

Fix hazard toggle operation:
BCM 726-29-02 xxxx xxx0

GT350 Only:

Enable exhaust mode toggle on bezel:
IPC 720 06-01 xxxx xxxx xE

Non GT350:

Enable drive mode toggle (part 1)
ABS 760-02-02 xxxx 7x (GT Performance Pack)
ABS 760-02-02 xxxx 3x (GT without Performance Pack)
ABS 760-02-02 xxxx 1x (EcoBoost All, V6)

Enable drive mode toggle (part 2)
IPC 720-06-01 xxxx xxxx x8

OPTIONAL STUFF
APIM:

GT Splash at start:
7D0-02-01 xxxx xDxx xx

Different colors for different menus:
7D0-03-01 xxxx x0x2 xx
(I did this so the audio screen would show up in red instead of blue to better match the base gauges.)

You could also do the GT theme in combo with the GT splash:
7D0-03-01 xxxx x4x0 xx
(I tried the GT theme, didn't really care for it. I'm running the regular theme set to night all the time so the background is black rather than white.)

Is this all the coding that is needed...nothing else. Nothing with the APIM, FCIM, or other modules?

What did you do? I am currently working on a document that will explain what changes should be made to ensure maximum functionality.

You guys are fantastic, thank you for figuring this out. I'll be looking for this once I can source the main pieces.

As someone else mentioned, there is definitely money to be made for selling a plug and play kit. I'd buy one in a minute.
