Hi All. This is my second post. My first was about A/C unreliability in my 2011 GT. Again, this is a DD with 152K on the clock.

My car consumes oil like crazy - it has since I switched over to Mobil 1 5-20 when it had about 5K on the clock. The motor seems to work fine - it just likes consuming prodigious amounts of oil. As in about 1 quart or a little more every 1K miles. By the time I change oil on this car (usually after 9-10K miles), I have added 8 quarts or so easy to 8 the quarts it started off with. Everytime Costco has M1 5-20 on sale I grab a case.

I'm asking about this stuff because I'm considering a 2018 GT for my next DD.

Thanks everybody.

Not if they are broken in properly, no.

I think most manufacturers will claim that burning anything less than a quart per thousand miles is "acceptable". I call complete and utter bs on this but that is usually their official stance. My 2016 GT burned half a quart during the first thousand miles. I have not burned a detectable amount since, but I'm just shy of 5k miles now. My 5.0 F150 has 82k miles and does not burn a detectable amount between changes. My 94 Ranger burns a quart every 1200 miles or so, but it's got 217k miles on it so Im just going to keep feeding it oil until it has a major failure. After I rebuild it I expect close to zero oil consumption. Engines do use oil, but it should never really be enough to measure. I wouldn't think you'd be any more likely to end up with another coyote that burns oil than you would anything else.

I burned about a quart or more every 6k mile oil change for the first 3 changes
Now I'm at 20kmiles and I haven't burned any in last few thousand , I check it regularly and I'm relieved!

That's pretty bad, I can see having to add 1-2 quarts per extended oil change (10k miles) but 8 quarts seems excessive. With 152k miles on the clock however it sounds like the engine is pretty worn out. That or you have an external oil leak somewhere.

Yeah - it's pretty bad, but its consumed oil like this since I changed out the factory fill a little after 5K miles. No external leak is apparent. I know a lot of people complained about this with the early Coyotes - I'm interested in what the people with new (like 15-17) 5.0s are experiencing, or maybe that's its not a common issue.

I think I broke mine in properly - I bought it new with 4 miles on the odo and followed the owner's manual recommendations to a T.

That said, on another forum oil consumption was a frequent complaint on early Coyotes (11-12) - hopefully that's not the case with new Coyotes (15-17).

The 18 GT is at the top of my list to replace my tired steed - but these are a few concerns I'm checking out.

Ford states that 1 quart every 1000 miles is normal, check oil at every gas fill up. Mine did the same and then stopped burning completely somewhere between 7,000 - 10,000 miles. Don't sweat it! Just keep an eye on it

Mine stopped burning after 1500 miles. It's about half quart low.

It seems new motors normally burn a bit until things settle in.

Did you think to try 5w30? This new economy oil is very very thin and it wouldnt hurt to run 5w30. Especially with 156k miles
