Motorcycle guy here so I rev and I honk. Whatever it takes to survive out there. Lots of wackos. I could care less what anybody thinks of what I do.

FWIW, honking the horn on a motorcycle is useless.
Come to think of it, I've never heard a motorcyclist honk before

Revving means "Look at me, I'm cool"

Honking means "Pay attention, dumbass"

Can't be pretty serious if you have time to rev the engine, honking is much, much quicker.
In my experience Revving make people look.

Honking makes people have an existential melt down and feel a need to prove they don't have to listen to you.

At least that's how it is in New Orleans.

Honking=Triggered

Of course I'm also from the motorcycle camp and have learned the value of a quick trip to redline.

F no. I will lay on that horn until it pisses them off. Especially those texting pricks.

I honk at idiots. I love putting my car in neutral and rev until it hits the rev limiter.

Honking your horn at the wrong driver (G-banger) will likely get you shot.....

Yeah except I grew up in an area where everyone blows their horn at everything, and the general consensus is that people who blow their horns are twats. And blowing your horn, even if it's a quick little toot after sitting at a green light for 20 seconds, will result in either the person now sitting still just for spite, or an altercation because their vaginitis is flaring up.

But, revving of the engine doesn't elicit any of those responses because it's the honking that annoys people.

So I rev, it gets attention without creating problems.

I can't even downshift + revmatch without people think I'm being a douche and flipping me off, or giving me dirty looks.

There's no way I'd rev at people unless it was another muscle car and we were just having fun. When you drive a car that stands out, the last thing you want are enemies.

I think then, that this breaks down into a cultural/location preference. Sounds like each area has it's own expectations and risks of each method.

I think revving the engine only generates benefits in the revvers imagination.

35 years of slicing quietly through traffic I haven't had many problems if you follow some simple rules.

Don't tailgate
Stay out of blind spots
Always signal
Change lanes slowly
No matter the problems, keep driving like business, cool and methodical. Emotions are for bitches.

Use the horn. It's what it is there for. I normally don't use my horn unless the person in front of me is not going at a stoplight after 5 or so seconds or if someone pulls out in front of me, etc. People need to stop being upset if they get honked at as they are normally doing something they should not be doing.

Only time I have rev'd like that is when a bird landed in front of my car at a red light and I didn't want it to get hit. Wasted no time getting out of there.
