I am confident that I can get them in the $600 range, if not lower. They have already told me that they can provide them to me at $640 each right now, if I get an order of 5 units. The more I order, the cheaper they can provide them to me. (This is if I provide nothing more than HUB services to them, and let the community here work on development.) On top of that, I would be the one footing the bill to ship them to any buyers. Prospectively, if I slap down my corporate card and order 5 units, I'm out $3,200 and have to hope I get 5 people who want them, and then are willing to pay for shipping. (I'm a nice guy, but I'm not gonna lose $75 shipping out 5 units at my expense.) Ballparking it at $15 to ship, that puts people paying $655 for one, which I don' t think is enough savings to get 5 people committed to it.
Honestly I was ok at the $700 price from ebay. If you can get it to me for $600-650 I am 100% confirmed. (Assuming it really is plug and play, fully functional, no Engrish text in the menus and such lol)

Sub $600 would just be icing on the cake ;)

I can guarantee there are going to be preliminary issues with "Engrish" that will require someone with Android development experience to iron out. In the end, this Android platform is at least 10x better for improving than the TomTop could ever be.

Well it's been said here 9 million times, but the .apk can be pulled down and edited. When it comes to GUI, you're really only limited by the hardware. And with what I've seen this hardware is plenty capable of handling most anything you throw at it.

Does that mean there's a chance that we would be able to maybe change the color of the buttons at some point?

If they're attached to the unit, yes, but chances are, they are nothing more than LEDs powered by the car, completely separate from the unit itself. We're already working on this.

That's nice to know. If that unit is in a reasonable price. I "might" considering getting one. The things that bugs me is that it's running KitKat 4.4.4 (kinda outdated and some apps won't work in a near future. Not that hard to cook a newer AOSP rom for it though...) If those LED are RGB and controllable via the tablet then we could maybe write an app to change it like MyColor app for the car... Anyways, I built a little project for Android and This should work fine on the Tesla unit. I know some of the members here wanted the Android/Apple car play to their unit. My POC doesn't work with Apple yet. I kinda gave up on them a while ago lol.

I wonder how this would work on a tablet that size especially if it would need split screen for say hvac controls? (If that even an issue)

It should work the same as if I run it on my phone. Android Auto can work portrait or landscape (of course landscape is better)

Just an update, the ones who manufacture the unit currently on eBay are no longer interested in improving the unit. It took a lot of back and forth communications to get them to be up front with me, but they pretty much said they will sell them no matter what, they don't have to provide service, since people don't want to go through the hassle of returning them to China. They also explained this is why they don't sell on Amazon, because it would involve a US-Based return hub. So- with that in mind, I've already started contacting other companies in regards to making them, but it won't be a quick process. Agent_S550 per our convo in PM's feel free to move forward on your idea as well.

To be fair this isn't all the unexpected. I think the only reason so many people latched onto the TomTop and this unit are because of the effort that people have put into improving the unit's software (I.E. STANGATX and others). I think this unit would still be great (Baring any hardware issues) and i look forward to it in upcoming months after i recover from tires..

They have offered me 4 units at $600 each, as they sit. If anyone is interested, I can arrange this.
Do you think they could send you a test unit for review? That could leave us plenty of time to know what type of hardware they're using and dump all the ROM/APK and make some testing on it.

It's a RockChip RKPX3, and I'm still working on the sample, but they're super spotty on communication with the holiday there. They were quite blunt about the fact they don't give a damn about customer satisfaction when they said they don't care about fixing anything, because they're still selling them and people won't go through the hassle of returns to China.
