Re Ping, I switched from 87 to 91 months ago, so the car had plenty of relearn time before install of PP2. I wonder how many with ping issues are just now switching octanes???

1800 miles on the car and have used only Sunoco 93 excluding whatever the dealer put in for the first fill up. As I reported yesterday, the ping was gone but will make another run today today and if it doesn't do it then it was a learning issue.

This is how I noticed ping day 1
1) bring it up to 2800 in 2nd gear (man)
2) accelerate moderately towards 3500
3) listen very carefully for the ping

Something to consider is the winter blend fuel that is most likely out in certain areas of the country. I know locally (WV) it is more prone to detonation as opposed to the summer blend we receive. Obviously this in not an area of concern for those in warm climates, but if your area uses the winter blend it will definitely have an adverse effect on the tunes aggressiveness.

Ford also uses an Octane Adjust Ratio (OAR) which basically keeps track of knock detection trends and is used to scale back timing over time. This is how the ECU can run on different fuels such as 91 vs 93. Optimum timing is set for 93, but those running 91 the computer will adapt the consistent knock events and scale back timing accordingly. Hope this helps.

It should not ping, ever. The entire point of the knock sensor (as you've noted) is to avoid just that UNLESS the tune has pushed the timing too far such that the ECU cannot pull enough to avoid the ping.

My old M3 with its 11.5:1 compression ratio has never ping'd once, ever, on 91 CA fuel. There are days when it feels super fast and others when it doesn't, surely the ECU pulling timing like should, never a peep. The Mustang should not, either. If this tune has an OAR it doesn't seem to be working properly for certain members here. The stock tune doesn't ping on crappy winter blend 91, so....

The tune is the problem, not the fuel. Hopefully we can figure out how to resolve this.

Can you let us know if the Ford Performance AOS doesn't fit? I'm about to buy the Power Pack 2 + FRPP AOS.

Mine did not fit. I could get it in there, but it was pressured up against the GT350 TB electrical connector so I had to take it off for fear of causing damage.

Full disclosure, I paid way too much for the install. They charged me shop rate for 4 hours, and at SF Bay area service department prices, it was $600

They are very professional, communicate well, and the work is always super clean. Also, they followed through with all my requests. Most importantly, they downloaded everything to my jump drive, and provided it to me at pick up. This was very important to me, as I wanted to have the tune and upload software in hand in the event there was ever a problem.

Even though I paid about $200-$400 more than I should have, so far seems worth every dollar.

I created an account on the ford performance site that the tech used to download the pp2 tune and upload the stock tune that I now have access to. I haven't tried it but he said I could use it in the future to make changes or redo the tune. My dealer wanted $700 and a dealer 10 miles further wanted $120, Glad I shopped around and may have found a dealer that is not as fancy as the one that sold me the car but obviously more willing to work with customers.

Auto ignition refers to the diesel cycle where compression/heat alone is the driver of ignition by design. It does not apply to the gasoline engine cycle.

Removed my Roush CAI and had the PP2 installed, I do hear the "POP" every time I shut the engine off, I do notice a little more oomph in my rear and a lot more throttle response. My exhaust is the Ford Racing (Performance) X-pipe and the Roush Axle backs with single outlet.

The exhaust is deeper and the ride is a little more spirited.

Lol... You're right... maybe. I'm no expert, but it is interesting how many different ICE (and external - sterling) designs/arrangements there are out there. Many are perennially on the cusp of commercial success. I was trying to keep things simple. It seems that the experiences offered by others about pinging are at least at modest throttle openings; annoying, but not likely destructive. Note that I'm not suggesting this is okay for an OEM mod, just discussing the phenomenon.

When detonation does occur at WOT conditions you do not hear any knock, it is just that suddenly things don't work so well afterward. I experienced it a few years ago with an old British bike (Norton) that was pretty well tweaked. It had Amal carbs and one carb briefly went lean when accelerating hard at high rpm. There was no knock; it just suddenly started running poorly. I made it home, but it would not restart. Disassembly found a scored cylinder, top compression ring in many pieces and a leaking head gasket.

The autos are also 6 speeds. And you can shift them manually with paddle.

Hey Rich, did it ever quit raining in So Cal? Can you get that pic of the trimmed engine cover the dealership did for you? Take it off an bring it inside if lighting is bad for you :cheers:
