Looking for a good helmet for a good price. Anyone have any suggestions? I do not track the car often at all so I'm not looking for something crazy, just something legal and decent. Thanks in advance!

I use a G-Force, GF3 full face, they are around $250.
You can get an open face, GF1, for under $200.
Keep in mind even if our cars are not real fast, the car that hits us might be very fast, cause a big impact and a fire, especially if they leave the line later than you. That's where an open face would not be as protective.
Keep in mind helmets are also only good for so many years, and it has nothing to do when you buy it, so do some research before buying. :)

I just bought a Simpson Bandit for my big head. I love the way it fits, but it is a little tricky getting my glasses on though. But given the class I race I am almost always the slow car and I am getting chased by cars/dragsters running over 140 mph in 1/8th, I figured overkill is better. It's the same reason I bought a double layer jacket/pants even though a single layer is all that is required for my et.

Luckily I have a Summit Racing that's only about a 1.5 hour drive from me. I highly recommend that if you can find a place that stocks helmets within a reasonable driving distance, go and try stuff on. I went and tried 3 different full face helmets, each in 2 different sizes. One brand I don't remember, felt cheap and looked it, didn't like how their cushioning was inside. I tried a G-Force, I know they are a good brand but it didn't feel right on my head. It put pressure on my forehead and the back of my head but had room on the sides. Lastly I tried on a Simpson and it fit like a glove. Equal pressure everywhere and just fit perfect for me. Not saying Simpson is the way to go at all, just more that we all are different and what works for one person may not be right for the next. Personally I am glad I have a place I could try stuff on before I bought. If you don't have that luxury and have to purchase online, make sure you buy from a place that will let you return easily so you can get a different one.

Dead on with an oh.
I have always used Simpson helmets, and have always liked how they fit me. When my dad was racing, he didnt like how the Simpsons fit him, so he bought a G Force and liked it better. I tried it on, and actually have it now, but I dont care for how it fits me even though it is the same size as my Simpson.

Is that a car helmet or a motorcycle helmet?

Fwiw most car racng organizations won't let you on the track with a motorcycle helmet.
They'll melt if exposed to fire.
I forget which site I saw it on but they had a video of a motorcycle helmet that effectively melted into a molten pile in less than 30 seconds.
If your head is in there it won't be pretty.

Some good info:

I have the Bell RS7. It's been a great helmet.
Make sure whatever you get has an SA2015 rating.

The NHRA rules don't differentiate between motor cycle or Car helmets? They only specify that helmets be SFI or snell 2015 or 2010 rated. The paragraph below was taken from the 2017 NHRA rule book.

TA s outlined under Class Requirements, drivers in all classes, including motorcycles, must wear a helmet meeting Snell or SFI Specifications. Full-face helmet mandatory on all cars 9.99 or quicker. See individual Class Requirements for additional requirements. Shield mandatory 7.49 and quicker. Drivers of NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series and E.T. cars (13.99 or quicker) must use a helmet meeting Snell K2015, SA2010, SAH2010, K2010, M2010, SA2015, M2015, or SFI 31.1/2010, 31.1/2015, 41.1/2010, or 41.1/2015Specs. Drivers in supercharged, front-engine, open-bodied cars and Funny Cars must wear a helmet meeting Snell SA2010, SA2015, SAH2010, or SFI 31.1/2010, 31.1/2015Spec

So unless your in a funny car or front engine dragster. The helmet I mentioned is fine. Most helmets are made from a polycarbonate or carbon fiber material. So it's not like a motor cycle helmet will melt faster than a "car helmet?" My 95 GT is looking to break into the 8s this year and I've never been questioned about my helmet during tech. I wear a nomex face mask under my helmet anyway.

For entry level helmets we offer SafeQuip's New SA2015 Legal Helmet. This Hemet exceeds the latest Requirements for any Track-Day or Auto-X Group out there, NHRA legal etc.

Most of the smaller HPDE Track Day Groups are beginning to shy away from Motorcycle Helmets. This helmet is already equipped with the posts for a HANS device (2015 Reg) so if you progress you are not buying another helmet right away.

Coupon Code; SAFE and they are under $200 delivered to your door :ninja:

NHRA may not differentiate, but most Mile events as well as most HPDE require a SA2015 helmet nowadays and will NOT allow you to wear an M spec helmet.

And yes, a motorcycle helmet will melt much faster than a car helmet.
What's the SFI rating on your M2015 helmet?
Guess what, it doesn't have one.

From the Snell site:
The SA standard was designed for competitive auto racing while the M standard was for motorcycling and other motorsports. The K standard was released to accommodate helmets used in karting.

There are three major differences between them:

  1. The SA standard requires flammability test while the M and K standards do not.
  2. The SA and K standards allow for a narrower visual field than the M standard (Some SA and K certified helmets may not be street legal).
  3. The SA and K standards include a rollbar multi-impact test while the M standard does not.
I'm not trying to argue, just sharing what I know so someone doesn't buy a helmet that won't work at their org.
Every year I see at least one person at a Mile event not pass tech because he has a motorcycle helmet.
Flammability is also a big concern. Years ago I saw what happened to a bike helmet in a car fire. It was gruesome.

LOL ok, how many people on here are racing in mile events? OP you plan on running mile events??? 99% of the weekend warriors just wants a helmet that'll pass tech at the local drag strip! So again. If your not driving a funny car or running in a mile event. The helmet I mentioned is fine! If your on fire you have bigger problems then a helmet. You might want to install a fires suppression system like the one in my 95GT! If your really concerned about fire.
