Hey guys,

I've been watching a lot of videos of Mustang crashes lately and what I notice is that the majority of S197s and Fox bodies crash because they lose control at launch (mostly cars and coffee) whereas the S550s crash because of reckless driving. Now, I know the S550 hasn't been on sale long enough to be in more videos, but you guys think the live-axle vs indy is the main reason for the difference in crashes?

That and the S550 has superior traction and stability control systems.

I think the main reason why they crash is because they're just idiots. I don't care which engine you have, if you don't drive a Mustang with respect, it's gonna bite you in the ass.
OMG,I love it, a man with some INTELLIGENCE, and not some S550 person that thinks the S550 is the second coming of Christ.:first:

Mostly bad driving. A lot of those vides, when they start to lose control they over correct and seem to stay on the gas! Swallow your pride and save the car. gently off the gas.

If you do a hard change in a 550. First to second the backend breaks loose, before I have time to change input the computers are already moving power between the wheels. I'm very impressed with the sport modes on these cars. Remember too, track mode has no nannies, no traction control and no advance trac. Not a good idea on the street no matter how bad ass you think you are. Just my 2c

Live axle cars IMO don't communicate their limits very well. It all goes at once, which tends to bite these guys in the ass since the type to try and show off (not talking about just a little throttle and noise for the cameras here) going out of cars and coffee is the same type to have never practiced pushing their car to see how it behaves in a controlled environment. Add in spectators and a big ego and you've got a recipe for people/cubs/fences getting run over.

Don't mean to take away from the post but the track mode does still have slight advancetrac on. I know this because of wet autocross events. It'll try its best to keep the car from coming around and It does do a great job too. You have to hold the traction control for a good while (5-10 seconds) and then it's fully off.

Also having had both a coyote powered s197 and s550 I can safely say the independent rear sure makes a difference.

If you leave traction control on (even in the sport mode/reduced modes), it'll save you from an awful lot of trouble and embarrassment. I've done all sorts of dumb shit with this car, and a combination of leaving the f*cking traction control on and knowing when to take my foot off the gas has saved me.

In fact, I have a hard time understanding how *anyone* loses control of this car without turning traction AND stability control fully off, THEN gassing it like a dumb f*ck and wrenching the wheel around. You almost have to try in order to lose control of this car.

For some people, their "only" way to drive is to turn off the traction control even when they don't have a clue how to drive a RWD car.
It's like those people who believe not wearing seatbelt is safer.

If anything, it's because the Fox/SN95/earlier S197 cars have come down enough in price to be affordable for more of the people with limited driving skills and unlimited gotta-show-off desires.

There is nothing inherently uncontrollable about a solid axle car as long as the car is maintained and the driver respects its lower limitations where bumps are encountered (no, IRS is not totally immune to tire grip disturbances caused by hitting bumps).

What gets me is if I get the back end squirrely, the electric steering doesn't have the right resistance, even in sport mode, to precisely control the steering wheel with your left hand. Like it just jolts left and right very easy - the car straightens out but there wasn't that "oh, yeah, I got this" feeling that I've had in many other cars doing the same thing. I don't know about others, but I feel like that might catch people - they'll over correct the other direction because the steering popped to opposite so briskly like it went from center (top of a mountain) to left or right (down the cliff) instead of the resistance being opposite. Half feels like the car is handling the steering for you. I guess it could be in theory. I know my truck will auto-correct for wind gusts on the highway and it took me ages to get used to that... I'd be fighting it. Eventually I learned to just let the car handle adjustments to wind and it was pretty cool, but before I was going into other lanes! Electronic steering is a different 'nanimal.
