So reading though an article on the FRS in one of my old C&D mags, it notes that the 2.3 in the RS "uses a new cylinder head that is cast by Nemak and machined by Ford". I tried searching online and couldn't find anything else to confirm this. However, it got me thinking about what the differences were, and what the potential gains could be realized, if any, by doing the swap. What could be some of the potential challenges with ? Obviously some new tuning would be in order but what else?

FRPP just released a new head for the 2.0 and 2.3's.

I'd check that out instead. Focus ST people are jumping all over them.

Well on the Focus, they have a shit design of a headifold. So the head has a single output port, and it's honestly barely bigger than a single port on the Ford Performance head. So more flow will help not only with output/spool time on aftermarket turbos.

I mean the price isn't insane, so if you already maxed the stock turbo, and went to a better turbo with auxiliary fueling, you can consider a head then.

It's a thing that can be helpful, but isn't a glaring hole in the scheme of things, especially since we are still fairly new to direct injection, and the biggest problem that exists is running out of fuel, and injectors and a BAP can't fix it. You have to have an engineered port injection added on top. Everything thus far then is just a garage engineered bandaid that is doing wonders in the meantime, but an upgraded HPFP would be a godsend, but none exist

In all honesty I would just wait.... Some after market company will eventually make a wicked head for our cars. Give it some time and the market will continue to grow :)

This is interesting:

"Oil drainback passage modifications are necessary to use this head on the 2.3L Mustang EcoBoost block. Contact Ford Performance Techline for instructions. "

From TheDivaDanielle's link.

Right now to make the new FR head work, you'll be into alot of money. On top of that it uses the 2.0 cams/HPFP and from what I understand they have less fuel cap. From what I was told it is standard HO head for the UK. But it would flow way better

yes, it's terrible.
Wow, if that's a DI engine, it is going to make media blasting to remove valve deposits just about impossible when the engine gets older.

I sense a class action lawsuit by RS owners when their cars get older...

P.S. Can't be any worse than the '62 Ford F-100 "unibody", where Ford said "why do pickup trucks need the gap between the cab and the bed, anyways?"

Yeah, it would cost at least $1 million to engineer a new HPFP (at least that's what Adam @ Tune+ said a while back...). So you'll need someone with deep pockets to stand behind it. Not to mention that in the auto aftermarket circles, 1,000+ units is considered a good run. $1000 HPFP, anyone? And that's just breaking even on the engineering costs :frusty:

i think the "headifold" design is only on the 2.0 but it's not like I've looked into what's on the 1.6 and the 2.3's
