Just popped my hood and noticed the filter is not as blue as it used to be. I haven't had it terribly long, maybe 5k miles

Any time frames when to re-oil
Any tips for cleaning the filters on the new car?

They don't need much oil. Just clean and reoil every year, or 6 months if you're in high-dust situations (fuck the sahara desert, btw).

Also, with oiled filters it's pretty tough to get the amount of oil right. This is because too little will not give protection, and too much will start to be sucked into the IM and engine. The problem with the latter is that it tends to gunk up the MAF, and the engine starts running rich cause the MAF does not read as much air coming past.

So the solution to this is to oil more, run it for a week, and then clean the MAF with cleaner solution ($10 spray can; should last for a couple of cleanings). This way, the filter is optimally oiled, and the MAF is clean.

I had been wondering the same thing a while back. If I recall, the Steeda guys were saying that the blue color on their filter is actually from the oil. I had mentioned that I had an old K&N Filter Cleaning Kit laying around (cleaner spray and the oil) and could I use that to clean the Steeda filter. It sounded like that should not be a problem but it will turn the filter red instead of blue.

I'm not sure if Steeda sells their own cleaning/oiling kits.

This thread actually got me thinking about it again as I have not gotten around to cleaning mine yet. I'm guessing I probably have 7,000 miles or so on mine now. Will try to do it before Fall comes around.

It's an S&B filter right? I think JLT uses the same filter and they sell cleaning/oiling kits on their website, I believe.

When the filter turns grey, oil it. I use the K&N recharge kit (I like red). Wash it from the inside out, allow it to dry overnight, oil it, go.

If you are being serious, then you are way over oiling. I had a blue filter on another one of my cars and the blue would go away pretty quickly.

Oddly, red does not seem to go that fast.
yes I'm being serious... I don't just throw more oil onto it... it gets cleaned first. I'm not dumb.

the s&b blue oil last pretty decent time before it fades.

Simple enough to just remove the filter?

Yep, use a screwdriver to loosen the worm gear on your band clamp, pull filter away from inlet, clean.

Depending on where you live & the conditions - some CAI filters will need more attention.

1. APPLY CLEANER
Remove Air Filter from Vehicle. Liberally spray Air Filter Cleaner onto both sides of filter and allow to soak for 10 minutes to loosen the dirt. Do not allow cleaner to dry on air filter.

2. RINSE FILTER
Rinse off air filter with cool low-pressure water applied to the clean side out in order to flush the dirt out of the filter. Continue to rinse the filter until all traces of cleaner are gone. It may be necessary to repeat steps 1 and 2.

3. DRY FILTER
After rinsing, gently shake off excess water and only allow filter to dry naturally. Do not oil until the filter is completely dry. (overnight is ideal)

4. OIL FILTER
Spray Air Filter Oil evenly along the crown of each pleat holding nozzle about 3" away. Allow oil to wick for approximately 20 minutes. Touch up any light areas on either side of the filter until there is a uniform blue color at all areas. Reinstall Air Filter

Best Regards,

TJ
