Supposedly you get the peak performance of the 5.0 by using the premium gas. I personally have always used 93 octane every single time I filled up.

I just put some in a day ago and seem to notice it helps.

I always run 87 now. I tried a couple tanks of 91 and it didn't seem to make a lick of difference. I went on a nearly 400 road trip with 87 and averaged almost 29 mpg with 3.55 gears and 20" wheels. To me it's just not worth the extra expense, and my car runs perfectly.

Ditto. Same mpg, same gears... same number of road trips lol

Take your car to the track and run 87 and then run premium, that should change your mind. Yes, on the stock tune 87 is fine and theres nothing wrong with daily driving on 87 especially if you are just cruising on the highway and getting from point A to point B. But if you are performance minded, there is a good difference. If you could watch the knock sensor activity on 87, it should give you an idea of the performance you are losing.

Shoot, when I see slight knock sensor activity with a poor tank of 93 I can certainly tell a difference.

I notice a much bigger difference in the mid-range on 93 vs 87, particularly with the new Shell V-power Nitro+. The peak power difference isn't much, but I'd be surprised if you didn't notice a difference after 10-15 miles on a fresh tank of good 93.

For tanks where it'll be all highway, I fill up with 87 to save money.

BP gas here has much better knock resistance than Shell. I actually notice a big difference on BP 93 vs Shell 93. My data logs reflect this as well.

Factory tune is pretty conservative on 91+. Ford Performance can get extra 10-30hp by just a tune.

I had some bad 91 the other day (quarter tank sat in 90 degree garage for 2-3 weeks), it carboned up my exhaust tip when the engine was pulling timing and ignition to deal with the low octane.

Interesting. I noticed the exact opposite with the gas here! 4 straight fill-ups with BP 93 (right by my house) and then I just happened to grab some Shell 93 on an empty tank a couple weeks ago. I wasn't expecting or looking for a difference but I noticed it very quickly.

I didn't notice a lick of difference. Granted not back to back testing, but I ran 12.87 @112mph stock on a 1/4 tank 87 octane, the next week I ran 1/4 tank 93 and ran a 12.90 @ 112mph.
