I just cannot figure out the auto wipers. I have read the manual.Sometimes hey come on for a single wipe for bit of water. OK. At times it is pouring and thay don't come on at all. Are hey like the auto lights that you never have to switch them on and off?

I have also noticed some hesitation at times for them to get into the "flow" of things when it starts raining. But it seems to only happen for me when I first start up, or when it first begins to rain. I try to wait it out and let the wipers get going properly. Usually doesn't take too long, although it may be hard to see for a short time. Once they get going though, I am very happy with them.
You can also try switching them on manually for a few seconds, then switch back to "auto" mode. I have done this also at times, and it seems to get them to start working properly. I really don't think this step is needed, but it does speed things up to get them working properly for me.

Look in your vehicle settings. There is an option for a courtesy wipe. Turn it off.

I'm pretty sure this is only in reference to when you wash the windshield.

As for the OP's issue. I have found (on our Explorer) that if the wipers were already set to Auto and the window was dry when the car was shut off, then it starts raining while the car is off, when you start the car the wipers don't notices the rain.

2 ways to fix this (again coming from the Explorer since my car isn't here yet). Either click it to all the way on, so they get a wipe, then go back to auto. Or, if they aren't already at their most sensitive auto setting, click it up a setting and that should trigger a wipe. Then just put it back where you had it.

I think some people just woke up on the wrong side of the bed. :)

More on topic - sort of - I do not have auto wipers and am completely fine with it.

I have had them in 3 other cars (chrysler, mazda, BMW) and io not one of them did they work well/consistently. At least in my 300c srt8 I could turn off the auto function and use the manual intermittent. With the speed3 and 135i I was stuck with auto and usually would just manually activate a single wipe instead of dealing with the debacle that was the auto wipe.

Unless it changed for 2016, not everyone does. I think it was bundled in with whatever package has adaptive cruise control.
Oh, I wondered because I don't see it on my Premium.
